HSBC just doubled my MasterCard limit this morning, so clearly they must be fucking mad.

Discuss.

I get my limit increased all the time.

I'm never going to use it, but its handy to have just in case.

Its handy incase your card gets stolen, last thing you would want is going over the limit on your stolen card :(

Egg kept doing that to me, I kept telling them not to, eventually I told them to get stuffed, and cancelled the card.

I've had HSBC do it to me a few times now, my current limit is totally crazy......they always make it sound like they did you a favour by raising it.

They increase it to tempt you into buying more things, and thus paying more in interest fees. Therefore I object.

yes
its like some companies (you know the shit ones that advertise on satelight and itv) advertise their loans as being "secured" (for the fools among us), where as you want them "un-secured" (so that if you dont pay you dont loose your house or something)

by having a higher limit you spend more and pay more interest

Yeah I remember maxing my limit out when I first got it, I'll doubt I'll do it with a limit more than 10 times yours....having said that I currently owe sweet FA on my VISA ;)

GL in Uni btw.

I have found that with higher limits it has been easier to keep the amount on them down. I only have about £500 on my Mastercard and my Egg card is clear.

However, when I had my £350 limit Student Barclaycard many moons ago, it took me 3 years to pay off the £350. I think I ended up paying for that stero at least 4 times :(

It's inticement as other's have said to get more out of you in interest ... they know that a percentage of people will end up using whatever credit they're given. It's not just credit cards/limits ... a couple of years ago I went to convert an overdraft into a loan (i.e. pay the bank less) and I explicitly asked them to set my overdraft limit to nothing. Next time I go a statement they had instead doubled it from £500 to a £1000!
