Stuck in HL Lamda Core level

Hi guys,

I'm having a bit of trouble near the beginning of the Lamba Core level. Past the 3 stealth ninja guys and a few big aliens, there's a room up a ladder with a scientist and a locked door in. I'm pretty sure he should open the door for me, but try as I might I can't get the bastard to do so. Am I barking up the wrong tree here, or is he just being an unhelpful twat? He won't follow me back down the ladder, so it seems that he must be used there.
