Ok so thanks to babs for this but I know a number of people are unaware that you can stream video (divx, xvid etc) over your network to your 360 without windows media centre (or windows media connect).
What you need is a program called TVersity:

and have a read of this forum post:

You'll need wmp11 and to open port 41952. Once installed you can enjoy streaming all your media through the 360 onto your tv without windows media connect or windows MCE.
When browsing for video through the 360 you'll need to search for a new computer to connect to. It will be prefixed with tversity.
I can vouch for it and it works perfectly. It transcodes to WMV on the fly.
For those of you who already know this please dont shout Glen (it's gay). For the rest of you: enjoy!
If the video appears blocky you may need to change the max transcode resolution settings from the tversity control panel. It defaults to 400 x 300 which isn't great. There is also some support for 720p but you'll need a dual core cpu apparently.
