Strange problem.

Whenver I try to play any sort of file in either windows media player or winamp I get an error in <unknown> and the program crashes. In the case of WMP it just freezes forcing me to ctrl+alt+del and end task.

I've tried reinstalling winamp, I've tried downloading the latest version of WMP. I've tried downloading a codec pack from microsoft.com. I've tried uninstalling the 'multimedia' folder in add/remove programs>windows setup and I've tried removing the video codecs in control panel>sounds and multimedia>devices. All to no avail.

OS I'm using is windows me if that helps.

Help! :(

has this always happened? or has it happened recently? if recently, after anything you've installed? presume your sound is still working normally in everything else?

It started after I installed divX to watch a HL2 movie I do believe. I uninstalled divX straight after and then mpegs wouldn't play iirc.

Sound in everything else is fine, yes.

ok, which versions of wmp and winamp? i know there were some problems with old versions of wmp, and likewise with winamp 3. have you tried reinstalling the codecs from one of the many codec packs btw?

WMP vers.9 (the latest one, downloaded it this week)
Winamp vers. 3.0 D

I installed a codec pack I downloaded from microsoft.com but after checking under the video codecs tab in sounds & multimedia, they don't appear to have been recognised or some such. Is there some way I should go about install/reinstalling new codecs?

Format, and lose all my mp3s!? I think not :(.

My modem would cry.

I've sorted myself a 'free' copy of XP so I'm hoping installing that my solve my problems :).
