Strange problem- I've lost 25gb!

This is very strange, I just installed windows XP pro...

I have a 160gb hdd partitioned into a 40gb (C:\) and a 120gb (D:\)

D:\ has NOTHING on it, i just formatted it yesterday.

Windows explorer says

"Free space: 89.7gb"

"Total size: 114gb"

Where have those 25gb gone? :-|

Specs:
GA-7N400-L mobo
XP2800+ Barton processor
Hercules Radeon 9800 (Flashed to 9800 pro)
1gb TwinMOS PC3200 DDR memory
Maxtor 160gb hdd w/8mb cache.


Any suggestions would be great
I understand that windows uses some space on each drive but 25gb? That's way too much.

I'm guessing that Windows XP Pro (like my install) has system restore on by default which uses up 12% of your drive space.

In your case, 12% of 160 Gb is 20 Gb-ish. The other 5 Gb? various odds n sodds, swap file maybe. It's only 5 Gb, not like you're short of space .

Bit of a guess, but that's probably what it is.

I just turned off system restore for the D:\ drive and set it to 2% for the c:\ drive. I rebooted and it still says i've only got 89.7gb free.

I daresay that my 120 Gb disk says "Used space 26.7 Gb" and "Free space 85 Gb" which means that I have a total of 111 Gb.

Not sure why.

I just formatted it again and it now says 114gb free....

After I restart though... it might be a different story...

Also, bear in mind that hard disk advertised at 160GB is not the same as, say for comparison, 160GB of DDR memory. Why?

Hard disks count a gigabyte as being 1000 megabytes, and a megabyte as 1000 kilobytes, rather than the computationally correct 1024. Therefore the amount "actualy" space is less than you might expect.

some manufacturers make their disks sound bigger by saying the size in bites, eg 160,000,000,000 bytes.
seeing as a kilobyte is 1024 bytes, a megabyte 1024 kbytes, and a giga byte 1024 kbytes, a giga byte is infact
1,073,741,824 bytes
