Strange Network Issue on XP

I have XP up and running, however I now have a very strange network problem.

On restart, there is no network, I cannot ping other machines and there is no access to them, the browser doesn't work as I can't access the firewall/router machine.

If I go into network properties and change a setting for the LAN card, it waits a while and then full network access is achieved, I get my filesharing and internet sorted, runs fine.

As soon as I restart/logout, its back to square one.

I have a static IP address for the XP machine and specify the firewall/router machine as a gateway and DNS, just like I had with Windows 98SE before.

Nothing is actually wrong with the network, it works fine once I get it running, its only the initial connection I have to "kick start" by using the hardware properties of the LAN card via Network Properties.

Any clues ?

what is the lan card?

is it a realtek?

if it is go to the microsoft update site as there is an update for the card.

Otherwise , i cant imagine what it is, except that i had a problem connecting between two machines on my lan because i had previously configured the onboard lan card for the cable connection.

the problem went away on its own in the end.

are you running the network wizard to connect the machines to the internet?
