Never (really) played a stealth class but how does this actually work?
Meaning would a high level (40 - 50) be able to see a (lets say) level 20 stealther?
I know a high level assasin would be able to spot a lowbie stealther but what about tanks and casters etc ?

They see them further away yes, but its not that far. Assassins get Detect Hidden from Stealth spec which doubles the range of seeing hidden characters. Thus eg Tank1 sees Rogue2 from 300 locs. Assassin would see it from 600 locs, which is quite an increase with big numbers. Later lvls the locs are so small Detect Hidden doesnt count that much anymore.

Stealth 'in general' - The Formula:

Disclaimer: This formula is not my own devising, it is however the accepted formula that I have found.

((OPPONENT'S Character Level - YOUR Stealth Spec)x20+125)

125 was described as 'approximately the length of one average horse'.

Thus, for example, your Stealth (17 +5) would be 22.
If you were in Thidranki and ran into a level 24, the range at which he would be capable of seeing you would be:

((OPPONENT'S Level: 24 - YOUR Stealth: 22)x20+125)
((24-22)x20+125)
(2x20+125)
(40+125)
165 (or about the length of 1.33 horses ;o)

Detect Hidden: Provides a fixed modifier to the range you can see enemy Stealthers in the Stealth formula (See above). Exact value is undetermined (it used to allow you to see from exactly 2 Times as far as others like Kron said, but was extended and haven't seen information to new range. Estimate 2.5 to 3.0 Times distance). Contrary to one popular misconception, your Stealth spec has absolutely NO effect on Detect Hidden.

See Hidden: Permits you to see non-Detect Hidden (non-Assassin), non-Camouflaged (Archer ability, acquired at level 20, only useable 10 minutes after end of their last combat) Stealthed players at any range, regardless of your level or their Stealth spec.

Basically 1.33 horselenghts is a bit wrong... since lag issues and moving opponents, you might see a glimpse of stealthed char before PA hits :) If both standing still it still takes a bit time to come in view, at least for me with 100ms ping to DAoC servers.
But otherwise I think thats close to the absolute correct formula, if it isnt.

kr0n, yes. ping has a bit of an influence on it, however, the biggest influence, is that the stealth detection bubble, is a pulse. which means it will check every 2-3 seconds (cant remember the actual time). so even with piss poor stealth, you can get up close and personal, if the timing is right :)
