Okay i read the "starting playing electric guitar" and saw the nice feedback people gave there. And as im starting to play drums myself now soon i was wondering if there is anyone here playing drums who could give me any tips? =)
The music i listen to is:
In flames, Dimmu borgir, Tsjuder, Mayhem, Satyricon and Children of bodom.

I know i shouldnt start off with metal at once.

.. So any tips? =)

You will never be as good as me, thats a nice tip.

All I can say is practice loads, listen to your teacher if you have one.

Aaaand here's a few of the people I find inspiring on drums:

Buddy Rich - maybe the best snare drum work you'll ever hear.

Mike Mangini - amazing polyrhythms, also here. In that second solo, check out the way he keeps the same double-bass rhythm going all the way through while going mental over the top of it...

Flo Mounier - blinding speed and some interesting jazz/Latin elements.

Flo again from his drum tuition DVD.

A really fun busker...

And the godly Neil Peart of Rush, one of the all-time great rock drummers.

If you're into extreme metal, I'd also strongly recommend listening to Pete Sandoval of Morbid Angel and Gene Hoglan of Death/Strapping Young Lad/Dark Angel.

Derek Roddy of Hate Eternal is pretty nifty around the kit.
I actually preferred Tim Yeung's drumming on the first HE album (the rolls around the kit at the start of 'Dogma Condemned' blow me away)...but yes, Roddy's no slouch.

The problem I have with most extreme metal drummers is that they often sound as though they've learned about 3 patterns, and just practiced those until they can play them at like 600 bpm...often very one-dimensional, which is why I like players like Mounier who have elements of other styles in their playing which makes them a lot more interesting to listen to in the end.

Also I hate the use of triggers - Hellhammer from Mayhem's a very good drummer but his sound is shit, horrible Atari clicking most of the time. Even though his playing's gotten better since then, his best sound by far is still the real kit he used on 'De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas'. Pete Sandoval tried triggers for a bit but has thankfully gone back to using real miked drums.

What do the FH drummers reckon on Lars Ulrich (Metallica)?

What about Phil Collins in his Genesis days ?

...or Sepultura's drummer (Chaos AD)

I think one of the flaws of alot of extreme metal is the lack of variation in the drumming patterns. Alot of the stuff is just blastbeats with a reasonably simple symbol rythm over the top. Which is one of the reasons why I like Paul Mazurkiewicz from Cannibal Corpse. He doesn't just pump out a constant blastbeat, but brings something very refreshing to the band.

Completely agree with you on the triggers, why I went off Morbid Angel after the first few albums. I much preferd the muddy sound with the low notes from the guitar and vocals.

ex-drummer, Igor just quit

Another good metal drummer is Charlie Benante of Anthrax, very under-rated.

i have no idea how to actually achieve it, but many of the drummers i admire are former jazz drummers. so go for that in some way :)

Phil Collins is - or was in the 80s - the best drummer in the world

As far as I'm aware, the fastest double-bass drumming ever played by a human is "Opening Of The Gates" by Pete Sandoval (Morbid Angel)...1'25" into that song, it's unbelievable...

Maybe that might be a bad example lol, but alot of the metallica songs you can hear his great drumming, although you gotta get past the guitar playing of Hetfield and Hammet, here is a anime clip :X but has the battery song in it, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5arhNA6JFY

Sorry i cannot find a better example at the moment ~:p
