Spellcrafting help

I'm trying to get my head around spellcrafting and so far am getting it except for a couple of ToA related things.

Can someone tell me what "Focus" is? i.e. Focus +5 lvls as I have no idea.

There is also a gem called something like "Transmutative Precipitant" that has no description and I have no idea what it's for.

The Herald has a nice document explaining all the stuff but it was last updated in 2002

Any help is appreciated.

Focus is only for caster staffs , makes spells use less power.

Transmutive precipitant (i cant check atm) , im fairly sure is the ingredient for Siege equipment you can make (each crafter can make a different part for rams/trebs etc.....).

Oh right that would make sense. I thought the ingredients for that one were a bit odd.
