Help Speeding up my Laptop

My computer knowledge isn't great these days, so help a brother out :wub:

Recently my laptop's been running slow as shit, random errors with firefox etc, the usual crap that annoys me

Done the following so far;

Defragged
Spyware/Virus scans - cleaned up all the crap that came up.
Shifted as much stuff onto my usb HD as i can - HDD is now is about 50% full.
Registry cleanup

Anything else i can do? I'm wondering if the problem's related to using StyleXp as i've been using that for ages and can't be arsed to find a similar desktop theme thingy

Another unrelated thing - iis there a way to deal with poor audio/visual syncs in a video file? Only happening for one file so i'm guessing it's bunk, but it's an arseache to try and find it online now

A fresh reinstall of the OS helps alot.

I used styleXP a few years ago and besides taking up abit of RAM i couldn't see any downside with it.

Cant help you with the a/v sync issues though.

VLC can sort audio/video sync, just click the extended settings button

Windows Key + r - brings up the run box
type msconfig press return
click on the startup tab

This is a list of all programs that run on startup, untick any you don't necessarily need to be run on startup (messenger etc).

Good advice here, as long as you know what you're doing. If you're not sure what the program is check it in google but ensure you use the full name (with file extnsion) to avoid hitting sites trying to sell you crap or make you d/l something you don't need. I'm assuming you used Hijackthis for your reg stuff, I find it handy.

HOw long has it been since you formatted? Often if you leave it too long random errors will occur because of programs that are installed/uninstalled and the registry will become cluttered. I format every 6 months usually.
