I do believe that both sets of speakers should plug into the sub then the sub to the computer....or something like that.

Ignore him, you're better off in 'ere!

lol... but yea usually the speakers plug into the sub (well, the amp, which is situated in the sub), then the sub to the sound cards line out. Well, that deffo works for 2.1 speakers anyway :D For mine I have 2.1 sub/sat shite in one line out, then other line out plugged into me seperates for the rear as me good speakers are behind me.

As a sidenote I might need a word with you soon Mr. Spence. I'll be in touch.

why not just use good headphones for PC stuff?

Headphones are shit, my neighbours'd never get to appreciate anything new that way. Their toddler needs the influence of good music.

ah, but Kez...wouldn't you agree that some tracks are best when listened to in an fireplace/cuppa/headphones/nice chair setting?

O

No, I believe in music being loud and airy, whatever the circumstances, whatever the genre.

Get some nice Sennheiser headphones, you'd be surprised at how "airy" they can sound, far more so than your average mini system.

and not only that, but imo some bands/tracks were made to be poured straight into ones head. nothing beats it :)

Aye I'm aware a good pair of phones can sound just as good, its just a weird personal preference that music swarms around a room. There's no physical reason for the preference other than my own obscure piece of mind. Unexplainable really.

By the way, I'm thinking of upgrading my hifi system [a plan of years heh]. Since this is a thread about speakers, would anyone care to recommend me a good set?
some info: I'm not thinking of going 'surround'. I watch films with the sound piped through my current hifi system, but I listen to music more than that. My current system is an old technics component set that I've had for years [10 now iirc] with 'no-brand' monitors that I got off a dj-ing mate of mine. I was thinking of getting a new amp and new speakers at the same time. any thoughts?

That's Bose, & they rock bigtime - domestically anyway. They're a bit humdrum in the pro world though, but well used.

ARGHHHH

Bose are the single WORST speaker manufacturer ever!

On a budget, try either; Mission or Tannoys for small bookshelf style affairs (if on a shelf get some spikes). Floorstanding, Celstion cones are very nice sounding, my new cheapish fav's are the Castle Pembrokew which can be picked up for about 400 squids.

With regards to the rest of the system, if your CD player is alright with a digital out try inserting a new DAC and using the old Technics one as a transport alone.

eep. well I shall hereby demonstrate my total ignorance of all things hifi-ish: say what?

the cdplayer is a technics sl-ps620a and it has an optical out [?] is that the same thing?

as to the speakers, they'll be floorstanding aye.

If you buy a DAC unit and use the optical out of your old CD player to connect, you can get a probably decent transport (the bit that handles mechanically playing cds, the older units are normally more robust and handle error correction better) whilst using your whizzy new DAC to handle the actual conversion of 1s and 0s into audio, it normally works out cheaper than buying a hi end decent cd player as you'll only be paying for a lesser quality transport and a smaller DAC unit.

*breath*

If you give me some idea as to price you are looking to spend I can chuck you back some ideas as to what is in your price range.

I have a Marantz KI-Signature rig hooked up to a set of Mission 733i speakers. Cost 300 quid back in the day and are still very good speakers. Their replacements are supposed to be top notch also.

Ah, thanks Scooba I get it now. As to pricing, methinks tops would be 1000 euro or so [~600 squid] I'm utterly clueless in the world of hifi so any ideas will be well received indeed.

if you're goin for a stereo setup on zee cheap then I'd recommend Eltax Monitor III's for like 60 quid. They have a mint pure n accurate sound, and impressive bass response for their size. Before people say 'Eltax are shit' go and listen to some of these bargain speakers u cunts :)
