1 min: England stumble under the first bit of Springbok pressure. The tourists have a scrum just inside the English 22.
2 mins: Pretorious unleashes a monstrous up and under but Ben Cohen collects and Jonny Wilkinson kicks England out of danger.
3 mins: Corne Krige smashes Jason Robinson to the ground as the Sale full-back successfully clears when England find themselves on their own try line again.
4 mins: A scuffle breaks out between Matt Dawson and James Dalton and the referee has a word with them both.
5 mins: England are awarded a penalty in their own half after an illegal tackle in the air by Breyton Paulse. Wilkinson puts the ball out.
9 mins: Both sides are recycling the ball at frenetic pace. Werner Greeff appears to have found the gap to the line but a timely Dawson tap tackle brings him tumbling.
11 mins: Scrum-half Bolla Conradie comes off the field and is replaced by Test debutant Norman Jordaan.
13 mins: England are awarded a penalty within easy kicking range. Wilkinson makes no mistake. England 3-0 South Africa
15 mins: Greeff puts the English lineout under pressure with a deep kick. Flanker Lewis Moody limps off grimacing and holding his ribs. His place is taken by Lawrence Dallaglio.
16 mins: England are lucky to escape as Wilkinson knocks on a pass from Dawson. Butch James goes for a drop goal from the resulting play into the hands of Dawson who knocks on himself.
18 mins: Another poor drop goal misses the target, this time from Pretorius. A wasted opportunity for running the ball.
20 mins: Robinson is on the ground receiving treatment. He looks to have taken a blow to the head but he opts to play on.
21 mins: Ben Cohen scores an excellent try for England. Dawson makes it happen with a sniping break, lays off the ball to Lawrence Dallaglio and, although Cohen is tackled by Fleck, he has enough momentum to score. Wilkinson misses the conversion. England 8-0 South Africa
23 mins: Jannes Labuschagne has been sensationally sent off after an atrocious late tackle on Wilkinson.
26 mins: Wilkinson sends up a huge up and under and England's form man, Cohen, collects and touches it down over the line amidst a flurry of Springbok defenders. After consulting with the referee no try is given - a scrum to South Africa for a Cohen knock on.
30 mins: England continue the pressure on their rivals and it leads to a English penalty. They opt for the scrum instead.
31 mins: Will Greenwood adds his name to the scoring sheet. Dallaglio peels the ball off the back of the scrum and, as the ball is stretched out wide, Wilkinson reverses it to Greenwood who cuts open the Springbok defence. Wilkinson converts in front of the uprights. England 15-0 South Africa
34 mins: England are producing some divine flowing rugby. But it all halts briefly with a gifted penalty to their opponents.
36 mins: Robinson is clearly the Springboks' leading tackling target as AJ Venter blasts him to the ground. A penalty to South Africa results, which Pretorius just nudges over. England 15-3 South Africa
40 mins (+2): Pretorius goes deep with the restart but a massive punt from Wilkinson sends the ball to halfway.
40 mins (+4) South Africa steal possession from the English as a blind side move fails to take flight. And the whistle goes for half-time.
40 mins: A James high tackle on Dawson gives England a penalty. Wilkinson is on target once more. England 18-3 South Africa
41 mins: Wilkinson restarts for England.
42 mins: Greenwood has scored his second try after two stunning dummies en route to the line - a superb solo effort. Dawson takes the conversion successfully in place of Wilkinson, who is receiving treatment for an injury. England 25-3 South Africa
44 mins: Wilkinson has come off the field injured. Austin Healey jogs on to take over at fly-half.
47 mins: A brief period of pressure for the home side ends up with Healey booting out of danger.
48 mins: Healey already looks to be relishing his role as playmaker. A cross-field kick turns the momentum back to the English.
49 mins: Brent Russell is on for Breyton Paulse in a bid to add extra zip to the Springbok back line.

51 mins: The tackles are beginning to take their toll. Dawson is the latest player receiving treatment but he looks fit enough to play on. England earn themselves a penalty which Healey kicks for a lineout in the interim.
52 mins: Healey shows great vision to slice through the Springbok defence. Greenwood then has a go with a dangerous kick ahead. Pedrie Wannenburg touches down for a drop out.
54 mins: Dallaglio, Vickery and Dawson are all on the ground now, suffering from separate knocks. None of the injuries are serious enough to see them replaced.
55 mins: Adrian Jacobs replaces Pretorius and Dalton comes off. Lukas van Biljon comes on instead.
57 mins: England slowly but steadily head for the Springbok line. Healey fires up a diagonal boot towards Cohen. But the Saints winger cannot bring the ball down over for his second try.
58 mins: The players are dropping like flies at Twickenham. Andy Gomarsall deputises for Dawson, whose had a great game.
60 mins: Neil Back and Phil Vickery both miss good scoring opportunities in the space of a minute as they fail to lay off the deciding ball. It only looks a matter of time before they score again.
61 mins: England are awarded a penalty try after Phil Christophers is illegally dragged to the ground with a tackle round the neck by Greeff. England have Vickery to thank, though, after a surprise break. England 32-3 South Africa
64 mins: Referee Paddy O'Brien awards South Africa a penalty which gives them time to regroup.
66 mins: Two tackles from Richard Hill end a two-minute spell of Springbok attacking and England are back on the offensive.
68 mins: England look totally unfussed by every South African attack such is their stranglehold over the game. They have a lineout five metres off their opponents' line.
70 mins: Neil Back scores a try for the forwards. After sustained pressure from the pack, Back slips in unawares covered by Hill and Dallaglio. Gomarsall produces a great conversion. England 39-3 South Africa
72 mins: Tim Stimpson is on for Robinson and makes a mistake with his first move. Danny Grewcock is brought on for Ben Kay.
74 mins: South Africa once again find themselves close to their line defending another lineout.
76 mins: Hill latches on to a Healey chip and manages to ground the ball before it goes into touch. Stimpson has a go at the kick and also succeeds. England 46-3 South Africa
78 mins: South Africa are pushing to the final whistle in a bid to restore some pride.
79 mins: England are targeting the 50-point mark and launch another attack. But a Healey knock on causes it to end.
80 mins (+1): England hold it in their forwards and start heading for the Springbok try line with 30 metres still to go. Healey ruins it with a misjudged up and under.
80 mins (+3): Dallaglio takes the English past the half-century mark as he brings in the ball from the back of the scrum. Stimpson is successful with his kick and the final whistle goes. England 53-3 South Africa
80 mins (+3): England force South Africa over the line and are awarded a five-metre scrum - surely their last chance for a try.

OMFG

I cant believe Arsenal lost to a crappy team today!!!

Something is wrong with the world at the moment.

It has to be when England thrash SA so badly (or so well depending on your point of view)!

Just have to mention the cricket then I suppose...even though I dislike Australia winning.....

Ummm....yes....usually we kick ass in sports but there seems to be a slight technical problem at the moment.

Please be patient it will be sorted out soon. :)

FUck off.... after Chelsea overcome their minor technical hitch they will make the first step toward pushing you back to where your poor team belongs... the relegation zone :)

It annoys me when "little" teams go on runs and try to play with the big boys! (NB: All above points were said with tongue in cheek :p)

just a little addition,

South Africa played a little over 60mins (Three Quarters of the match) a man down after a dubious sending off.

So it is nothing to get really hyped up about, although the current South African team are nothing like the team that won the World Cup in '97 (iirc)

But had that fella not been sent off, some other South African would have been very soon. I agree it was a binning not a sending off, but SA were asking for it.

I watched it on video after I got in from work with the advantage of being able to have another look at a lot of the outrageously cynical things going on.

I really think something needs to be done. The South Africans were going into so many contacts leading with knees, elbows and fists, hitting people late with the shoulder etc. they weren't trying to win a game of Rugby, in some instances they were trying to end players seasons, or maybe even careers.

We have them in the first group of the World Cup next year, I'm pretty sure that even when we beat them they will have put some of our players out of the tournament, and that just isn't on.

If that does happen I think the IRB should look at banning the team for a year, or something along those lines.

gumbo i agree with you 100%, Jannes Labuschagne was unlucky to be sent off, but there were other South Africans and Englishmen that were extremely lucky to not have the same fate. Clive Woodward even said in an interview that he though some of his players were very close to the line, although they weren't being malicious. It isnt good for the game of rugby :(

Unlucky or not with the sending off, England would have walked it anyway on current form.

Roll on the world cup next year.

BTW: Villa bt West Ham by 4-1.

Luv it.

And SA won it last in '95, but lost to Australia in the '99 Rugby WC.

My 2p worth

While the result was pleasing, all the game showed was England does have a ruthless streak. The real benefit will come from the confidence that it will give a couple of the fringe players that came on as substitutes. Mainly due to South Africa being dirty. However, one thing I noticed that I really wish had been tried earlier in the game, was the moving of Jason Robinson to outside centre. While being a good fullback his attacking prowess is due to his acceleration/sidestep and not his top speed. In recent weeks he has been caught out by Doug Howlett and Elton Flatley (wtf?) for out and out pace. I would rather see him in the outside centre posistion regularly making clean breaks and giving try making passes, rather than dodging a few tackles and making a platform for the forwards to pick up on.

With regard to the sending off, perhaps harsh but he was late and didnt use his arms at all. A spear tackle basically; Lomu was banned from the Super 12 for 2 matches for doing the same thing. I was dissapointed with the way that South Africa played the game. Having watched most of the Super 12 this year, I thought they had the best team they have had since they won the world cup. Losing Conradie early on at scrum half was a big blow to them.
