Well I'll admit it took me by surprise. With all the talks about David O'Leary and Terry Venables apparently having an interview scheduled for today, they appoint someone who I didn't even think was in the running.

At work one of the few football websites I can access is the BBC site and I've been reading the 606 message boards. Newcastle fans are less than impressed with the appointment to say the least, and most other fans have been posting on their board poking fun at the decision. I think the chairman really hasn't done himself any favours what with the way he handled telling Sir Bobby Robson he was leaving at the end of this season through the media, then sold Woodgate when Robson wanted to keep him, then trying to buy Rooney when Robson had no idea what was going on, then finally firing possible the most popular man in Newcastle and one of the most popular managers in football of all time.. then, today, appointing someone with neither the track record nor credentials to take Newcastle up a level.

I think he may be the right man to tell Dyer to fuck off, Bellamy to shut up and show Shearer just who is the boss there, but otherwise I really can't see this being a good move for Newcastle.

I think he's been bought in mainly to sort the dressing room out, there's too many ego's in there and if one man can sort that out then Souness is the man. I think he'll do well there but the appointment seems to me as a stop-gap between now and when Shearer's ready to takeover.

'cept the way he sorted out the ego's at Blackburn was to let them go for a song. He didn't so much sort the problem out as ship it out. Newcastle have a number of prima donna's (Robert, Bellamy and Dyer to name three) who need to be taken in hand ... Robson, despite signing them, was too much of a grandfather figure, plus Shepherd announcing he would be leaving at the end of the season pretty much took any authority he had away.

I don't really expect Souness to "sort" them out, other than to get shot of them a.s.a.p.

Being a blackburn fan, the general mood is unlike most others ina scenario such as this whereby we're actually happier that the managers gone than the fans of his new club!

My memory is a little hazy but didn't Souness pretty much conquer all with Liverpool in the early 90's?

Oh and saw his first game in charge this afternoon. They were playing some nice stuff going forwards, still as ropey as ever going back tho. Southampton were abysmal tho.

No, he was considered to be the ideal successor to Dalglish because he was from "the boot room" (ex-player) but he struggled to cope with an ageing squad and big egos. He was a failure at Liverpool.

You are probably thinking of his time at Glasgow Rangers where they completely dominated all domestic competitions. Of course with only Celtic of a similar stature that doesn't say much.
