Sound problems :(

I think I've heard of other ppl having problems with this but I'm not sure of a solution.

I get a kind of clicking / stuttering noise in Q3 when playing. No idea whats causing it but it only happens in Q3. CS / Windows and everything else are fine.

I'm running a Sound Blaster Live! 1024 card with Philips DSS330 speakers.

Anyone got any ideas ?

Thanks,

Make sure that you've set the Quake3 cvar com_soundmegs to a higher value than default if you've more than 64 megabytes of RAM. It's also wise to ensure that the sound card is on it's own IRQ and not sharing an IRQ with the graphics card. It can also happen when A3D is enabled in Quake3 1.1x ( see my reply to your previous post on sound quality ) and the CPU is being taxed heavily.

If this only happens with Quake3 1.27h and doesn't happen with 1.27g when you've reset Quake3's s_mixahead cvar to default of 0.2 then it could be the updated sound code in 1.27h. An algorithm was implemented in 1.27h that automatically worked out how many sounds needed to be mixed ahead of time. It gave an FPS boost but on some systems it causes problems, symptoms are crackle, clicking or stutter of sound.

Arg ! Just when I thought I had it fixed I dont :/

Right, the following is from my autoexec -

seta s_loadas8bit "0"
seta s_mixahead "0.2"
seta s_compression "0"
seta s_khz "22"

seta com_hunkMegs "128"
seta com_maxfps "130"
seta com_blood "1"
seta com_soundmegs "32"
seta com_zonemegs "32"

I've got a P3 933 and 256mb RAM so that shouldn't be an issue. Is this really only something that happens with 1.27h ? Would I be just as quick reinstalling and only going to 1.27g ?

Thanks for all your help btw Req mate. Much appreciated.

Not just stuttering / crackling of sound, some can't even get sound in 1.27h =(

It's easy to confirm if it's 127h or not, rename 1.27h quake3.exe to 127hquake3.exe and re-install the 1.27g point release. You'll then be able to load up Quake3 using 127hquake3.exe or quake3.exe (1.27g) to confirm if it's the new sound algorithm causing problems.

I've got the same problem with my sblive!, how do I check if it's an IRQ problems with the video card... I doubt it is, but anyay, at this point, I would try anything to get results.

Q3 is the only game where I experience this problem.

From what I hear id software are aware of the sound problem and are rectifying the problem. Rumour has it the latest point release will be out of beta sometime in the next week or so.

With a bit of luck it will fix the sound problems.

Although it would seem it only takes away the rocket 'woosh' sound, the command

s_doppler 0

seemed (although I changed some other stuff that day to) to fix it for me.

>the rocket 'woosh' sound

I never hear that anyway, as my l33t strafing skillz(tm) make sure every one hits me right between the eyes :)

LOL FT, I know that feeling as you straffe straight into a rocket :)

Nah, seriously, the only woosh I used to hear was as I overtook my own rocket to go pummel the enemies health low enough so that the rocket would kill em in one ;) LOL
