Some questions for XBox 360 owners

So the moment has finally arrived. I worked as a gamejournalist for a couple of years and as a result of that the last couple of years I have always had all mainstream game consoles. But when the Xbox 360 was released I actually didn't pick up my preordered box... I'm still not sure why not but it just didn't feel right.

But lately it started itching again. As a result I've surfed around a bit and found two very distinct sides to the story. Apparantly you either love it, or you hate it. People say there aren't enough games. Other people say that the games that ARE there make up for that. People say the thing breaks very easily. Other people say that the xbox 360 only had 2% of it's releaseday units defective (which is amazing, the playstations were both well over 15%).

So my first question is: Did you have any problems with your Xbox 360? Did it break and if so how long did it take to get fixed? And a subquestion is does it really get extremely hot and isn't there some 3rd party thing to cool it more effectively?

My second question is about languages. Does the console, like the xbox, and like every other console tbh, have a language setting? Meaning that even if I was to buy it in Germany I could tell it to speak bloody English to me?

My third question is really a "b" for question 2. Do the games have language options? I know for example in France most PC games don't. If you buy a game there it's going to be in French completely. And since most game companies don't bother putting language patches on their websites this has fucked me over more then once when I bought games on my holiday.

My fourth question is. How uber is Live? I've heard amazing stories about it. And I was a Live subscriber on my Xbox for a couple of years but it never really grabbed me.

And my last question is. If I buy the thing I'll probably buy 2 games with it. The first is Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (yaya I know it's not a 360 but a xbox title). But the second I haven't decided on yet. It's going to be either that Pingpong game, or Prey. Any suggestions?

I had an xbox and yes it dose come with a set up screen for language from what I remember, but I fell into the second group and did not get on with it so I sold it on. It was a solid consol worked fine every time and the wireless controllers were awesome. But the thing I most like about the consol was being able to turn it on and off from the wireless controller therefore it was time to sell ;)

Im not sure about the games having a language option and i did not find xbox live that great but i never really got into it like i said.

My two favorite games on it were NFS MW and Condemed, i hated dead or alive i am crap at shooting on a consol so hated ghost recon and that other one i can't remember

Mine has worked fine so far (several months). Usually the problems begin when people place X0 vertically (sucky DVD-drive for that or something) which may lead to broken games and such. PSU is seperated which lowers the heat and I've had no problems in playing for 20 hours straight :p

Yeah, there is a language setting.

... and this is the main problem with the game - not enough games. To sum it up I wouldn't bother with Xbox360 unless you have big HDTV and DD/DTS5.1-system. As for the games I would choose Oblivion, Condemned (short game but cheaper than most) or Ghost Recon.

Oh, and the controller is just perfect

Ok, 1st production run 360's were loud and tended to be a bit flaky. The 2nd run improved things and now that the 3rd factory is online the problems are being very quickly eradicated. If you buy one now you are pretty certain to be getting one from the March production run and they use the quieter Phillips DVD drives as far as I know so that is a bonus. Regardless, the 360 is far more reliable than the early PS2 consoles ever were, Sony ended up replacing close to 15% of the PS2 DVD drives in the first 18 months because the lasers had burn out. There were still major design flaws in all the later PS2 as well. The older 360 aren't perfect but the newer batches are much improved.

As for games, in my opinion there are only a few must have games right now but there are another dozen or so that are very worthwhile purchases second hand. Once games like Lost Planet and Gears of War start to ship people will realise what a great machine the 360 is.

Languages are well supported afaik, loads and loads of German players on Xbox Live handing my ass to me on Halo 2 nightly. Xbox Live is the killer app in many ways, playing games like Burnout and Top Spin 2 online just kicks arse so much, I have heard great things about Call of Duty and Project Gotham 3 online as well. GRAW is cracking on Xbox Live, light years better than the crummy PC conversion. For £40 a year Xbox Live is a good deal and even if you can't afford that you can always play on the free gaming services like Xlink which gets better and better every week.

Thanks for the quick and to the point replies guys. Really appreciated. Guess I'm getting it then :)

That is kinda my point. I'm getting a 32 inch widescreen HDTV (a sony, ironicly enough) this weekend and I already have a 5.1 soundsystem :)

50 inches, sadly I have a small cock to compensate :p ;) :D

My ex girlfriend was always complaining she wanted another 2 inches but I told her a 12 incher would break her back :p
