I remember myself and a mate at age of about 9 or 10 trying to make "a mcgyver bomb" out of newspaper, plant fertiliser and sugar we found in my dad's garage.

Me and my mate tried to make the bamboo rocket, we had all the ingerdients and managed to get the fuse to light. It never took off though :/

When I was a kid me and my mates used to get a thick piece of metal from the metal work room at school, the drill out most of the middle of it, then drill a small touchhole in the top.
We'd then with a pair of pliers break of the heads of a load of matches (not the wood, just the combustable stuff) then ram it down into the tube. A piece of wadding, then some shot, hey presto , a cannon. You'd be quite impressed by the explosive quality of 300 or so match ends

Completely. I was going to add, my brother attempted this one day, rammed the powder down too hard and it went off, and burnt his hand black.
We didnt do it again after that
