giving the game another go, leveling up a cleric on the opposite side to which i played before on spatalos with a friend (who is a sin). our second day now and we're 25 and 24 respectively, so it seems a lot easier now. they definitely added more quests - we have had to grind maybe half a level each so far tops.

the bonus to playing now is that there is a lot of action in low level pvp, and getting the lvl30 gold pvp armour is basically essential to be able to farm/pvp at 50 anyway, so there is no real rush to 50.

at base though, the game hasn't changed a whole lot - but i think when the ground abyss comes, there will be a lot more pvp, or at least hopefully so. if not, it's just another account to sell ;)

I'm really enjoying the game, you can rift from 20+ and never have to even think about grinding if you don't want to.

You can easily login>rift> kisk somewhere and spend a week in the enemy faction land just pvping if you want to.

Sieges are fun, fort instances are fun because of the time attack nature of them with good groups anyway.

There could definately be more content and if your faction is sucking it takes away some of your content but then you have to help your faction to win more forts :)

Aion makes me sick tbh, I played it from release right upto 37 or so and christ was it the most boring game ever created, its just a cross between Linage 2 among other korean style mmo's, grind games are never fun tbh, theres only WoW thats managed to pull off the "Grind + Fun" combo out of any game worldwide and even WoW is shit.

DAoC is alot more "grind+fun" than WoW tbh (which is much more quest based). I've not tried Aion but I loathe korea mmo's so :p

thats maybe the reason i don't want to do it again?

besides, a FG grind group pre-SI in daoc were still ALOT faster then the equivelant in aion.

WoW doesn't have much grinding at all until your at max level when the instance grinds start.

leveling up is all about quests. which, despite popular belief, isnt grinding....

well, you CAN grind in WoW to but you'd be stupid if you tried because its not effective however you do it.

I beg to differ grinding quests is possible .. only difference is go grind these mobs to get x number of drops ... rinse and repeat in 80% of cases with the odd different thing thrown in ...

It just feels different as you have a shorter goal / objective to your reward so you feel better than the longer days of killing mobs that will lead to the ultimate reward of max lvl

took me around 4 months to level my first 50 in daoc, and around 6 weeks in aion. when i leveled daoc i was at school, when i was leveling for the first time in aion i was working 50+ hours a week ;).

Aion levelling is getting sped up soon as well, but 1-50 was like 300hrs or something, compared to vanilla wows 200.

In addition to the grind getting shorter they are actually fixing drop rates and adding armour+weaponsets into fire temple, upping NTC drop rates, ( basically across the board drop rate increases for all instances ).

I'm in favour of the levelling speed being faster for sure, I want to see more people at 50.

1.9 is out in korea tomorrow, and I'm guessing it's going through the localisation process for english/french/german/chinese/japanese atm.

PL in frontiers/PoC.

xp in those zones are insane.

started leveling my hunter a week ago, and after 6 hours i'd gone from 26 to 41.

kinda makes those free levels useless lol. even if they are every 3 days >.<

interesting

i felt like 2x xp weekend was perfect for the game really. I play with my gf and just mobs together is just too slow. Its quicker soloing which is annoying. We are lvl 24, temp and cleric.

Do you know what xp bonuses they are giving?

sure, but only if its repeatables.

in WoW for example.

most of the quests in WoW have some form of story behind them that span over x number of quests, or refers to quests you have done as part of one. and that makes those quests by definition not a grind.

because you cant do them more then once until you get to 70+ and can start the faction grinds of which only a select few rewards are worth doing them for, which really only boils down to the mounts nowadays.

grinding means repeating the same task over and over, so any time you cant do that exact task again its not grinding.

the quests them self might be boring sure, but its still not grinding in the proper meaning of the word.

just read the 1.9 patch notes and as far as i can see the increased XP only kicks in if your not progressing "fast enough"...

which looks more then a little dodgy to me.

still enjoying the game, the pvp is slowly starting to develop on spatalos, had some nice fights yesterday with our 4 man group vs. a group of 6-10 from some french guild (they grew each time they got raped ;)). thought i frapsed the fights but my fraps wasn't loaded :F

unfortunately the flying combat is still an absolute pile of unplayable shit, but the ground abyss will change all of that.

Nice vid, Miri.

How has Aion progressed since november/december last year? Is it still mainly a huge zergy laggy mess, or are things developing into more interesting DAoC-esque RvR? And how do you see the 1.9 patch changing things?

welllllll, there CAN be decent pvp at times, but it is patchy. if you are expecting 8v8 style daoc action, it won't happen. we basically camped beluslan (enemy high level zone) the whole weekend and got some decent action - around 600 kills this weekend which is a decent enough haul.

however, there is a lot of stuff you also need to do to be able to pvp - we do forts every day (gives ap, which you use to buy pvp armour, which you really need as each piece gives -% pvp dmg, and weapons give +% pvp dmg) and also grind cash on normal mobs a few hours a week since you need a lot of consumables to compete. if you have the time though and a decent group it is fast - my char is 2 months old at most and i have full abyss/pvp armour which a lot of players are still whining that they are struggling to acquire. i did it by simply putting the time/graft in and pvping a lot + doing forts every day (we have 3 forts right now, the 2 inners take 30-45 mins each and the outter takes 15 mins so it really isn't that bad).

in the next patch a lot of things become easier - you can buy all the stigmas from a merchant for a max of 2.3 mil, whereas certain stigmas prior to this were costing upwards of 15mil for the rarer ones. the drop rates for dungeons is also being "significantly increased" which will help a lot, since the items from dark poeta and theo labs/adma stronghold (elyos/asmo equivelant lvl50 pve zone dungeons) are definitely worth having if you don't want to grind ap for abyss items.

too long, didn't read version: 1.9 will lower the grind in aion, with higher quest xp, more drops, easier access to miragents/fenril and to stigmas. aion, will however still be a grindy game but the mechanics of the game and inherently the pvp is honestly the best in any mmo i've played since DAoC. the truth is the pvp is somewhat infrequent at times, but you can make the best of it and i honestly believe the ground abyss in 2.0 (coming around july-august) will make things even better.

i should be recording a lot more stuff over the coming months and i'll keep on posting it here if there is still interest.

Blimey, grinding at the gobbos, not thought about that in years.

But that was ace. That was where friendships were forged. The hours grinding at gobbos and trees were spent making friends and having a laugh.

These days, all the mmorpgs on the market are geared to anti social geeks who just want to spend 30 days solo questing to the highest level. Then when they reach the highest level its "oh fuck, I dont know anyone, now what do I do"
