Have to say Edgar Allan Poe myself. The style and rhyme of it all just, clicks together in that lovely grim way.

Chaucer's Canterbury Tales are always a good read.

Never go to the fuckin place in Canterbury though. Paid ~£20 for me and the missus and it was 30 mins of watching clay figures whilst listening to a half-beaten audio!

In my experience, if you have had a good teacher at school, you tend to remember those topics with fondness, whether its poetry, history, science, whatever.

Eg - I studied the Crusades for 2 years at school (A-level History). Our Crusades teacher was absolutely passionate about it. Read everything on it. He was literally oozing excitement every lesson. Made the lessons so interesting and so much fun. That enthusiasm spread into each and every student. Every single one of us loved it, and it made revision and the end exam that much easier and less of a worry.

Eg2 - I was taught to love the poetry of WB Yeats by an ex-Irish priest, who had since become a part-time alcoholic and womaniser. What a character ! Like our history teacher who was nuts about the Crusades, this red-haired, chubby, fat fingered ex man of the cloth adored Yeats's poetry, told us everything about his background, and cos we understood the poet, and our teacher, and the whole Irish mythology / faeryland / Irish revolutionary / IRA v English thing, we learnt to know and love Yeats.

Not so much the Crusades, but Yeats will stay with me till the day I die. Guess its cos I'm more of an arty / poetry kinda guy anyway.

Point is, you'll always remember a good teacher. Hopefully

limericks are fun even poorly.
