Just an alert for you guys, today I received yet another virus, only this was formatted thusly:

Hello user of Ntlworld.com e-mail server,

Our antivirus software has detected a large ammount of viruses outgoing from your email account, you may use our free anti-virus tool to clean up your computer software.

For more information see the attached file.

The Management,
The Ntlworld.com team http://www.ntlworld.com

Now NAV detected and removed it immediately, but for a moment I didn't see the bit about the attached file stuff. The virus was W32.Beagle.K@mm. I've not yet been infected with anything, but I'm getting quite a lot each day now.

They're getting very sneaky these people. Bastards.

Just received another, more devious version:

Hello user of Ntlworld.com e-mail server,

Your e-mail account has been temporary disabled because of unauthorized access.

For more information see the attached file.

Attached file protected with the password for security reasons. Password is 26232.

Have a good day,
The Ntlworld.com team http://www.ntlworld.com

Someone really wants me to open that attachment :)

Given my experience with Bogofilter I'd say any anti-spam software that uses Bayesian Filtering is a good bet.

My old spamassassin (too old a version to have Bayesian stuff in it) was getting to the stage of not catching loads of stuff. So, bunged bogofilter in earlier in my .procmailrc. Sure it doesn't catch EVERYTHING, but I'm getting maybe 5% false negatives, tops. Keep in mind this is my own private install of it, so things only learn from *MY* email, so of course I'm going to get the first incidents of new types of spam.

As for something to run on windows, not a clue, I refuse to do email on windows for the obvious reasons :p.

Yes XTro, give this a whirl:

http://www.cloudmark.com/products/spamnet/

Rather than just detecting spam from keywords it also uses a blacklist to remove emails known already to be spam (from other users flagging it as such).

I just installed this last night at your suggestion, I take it it's worth subscribing? I'm looking for something to use in Outlook Express that'll stop the 10+ spam emails / day I'm getting at the mo' (ntlworld & yahoo).

Probably best to use it for the period of the free trial and see how it works out for you. I had to stop using it as it doesn't work with my mail server connection (exchange) and we're currently looking instead at buying its big brother - Cloudmark Authority.

From what I've seen though it's extremely effective, the email which its filtering misses is cross-referenced with a database of known spam emails, as flagged by other users, so I guess it's the P2P of antispam. Of course spammers are developing new tactics every day, so there's no guarantee any email filter will remain as effective in the future, but of the options I've seen which just plug into Outlook/Outlook Express like that it's definately one of the best.

I just use McAfee Spamkiller it works fine, the wife is happy the kids don't get a load of pr0n if they open the mail. If your willing to pay the subscription, it seems to work pretty well.

I beta tested Cloudmark Spamnet and was very impressed indeed. However, I simply don't get enough Spam to warrant paying the subscription, even with the discount we were offered at the time.

More recently I've taken to using a comination of Spam Assassin at the mail server end (since it comes installed on my hosting package) and the Junk Email Filter in Outlook 2003 is excellent. Between them they catch everything. Outlook 2003's default behavior of not downloading images also takes the sting out of that that kind of spam too.

I get no spam whatsoever. Basicly, I don't sign up for pr0n with the address.

Best spamsaving tips ever:
  • Don't use Hotmail/Yahoo/Other common freebie site.
  • Don't sign up for dodgy looking sites with your main address.

Sorted :D

I don't get any spam. I don't even get any real email.
I don't like using email unless I have to.

I noticed this on another forum, hope it helps.

[font=verdana, arial, helvetica]Get enough SPAM lately? Have you ever gone to a website that asks for your email for no reason (other than they are going to sell your email address to the highest bidder so you get spam forever)?

Welcome to Mailinator(tm) - Its no signup, instant email. Here is how it works: You are on the web, at a party, or talking to your favorite insurance salesman. Whereever you are, someone (or some webpage) asks for your email. You know if you give it, you'll be on their spam list. On the other hand, you do want at least one message from that person. The answer is to give them a mailinator address. You don't need to sign-up. You just make it up on the spot. Pick jonesy@mailinator.com or bipster@mailinator.com - pick anything you want (up to 15 characters before the @ sign).

Later, come to this site and check that account. Its that easy. Mailinator accounts are created when mail arrives for them. No signup, no personal information, and when you're done - you can walk away - an instant solution to one way spammers get your address. The emails will automatically be deleted for you after a few hours.

That said, when I do sign up to stuff, I use that Nildram unlimited email addresses thing. *@username.nildram.co.uk. If I was to get spam, I would know where it came from because of the address it goes to. Then I can just block all emails to that address.
