Smoothwall again

Okay I got my annual bonus (actually more like an "anal bonus") and there's enough to scrape together a fifth PC for use as a new firewall/server on my home network.

I've been seriously thinking about getting Smoothwall, the PC will have an old AMD 750Mhz (Slot A) and VIA KX133 motherboard in it, probably with 128MB RAM, and the internet connection will be a USB ADSL Modem, I'd like to know if anyone has had problems using the Smoothwall installation.

Also I'm ashamedly a Linux n00b, my geek factor has taken a knock because of this and I want to learn a lot more about the cult of the penguin, so a few pointers specifically aimed at the version of Linux used by Smoothwall will not go amiss.

And please, please, please don't point me to Slashdot or any similar lame websites.

Are you ready for every one telling you which distro of Linux is the best?

I prefer Red Hat, although I don't tend to have it installed atm ;)

AFAIK, and this may be wrong, but the Smoothwall comes as a complete distro plus software installation, so I may not have a choice.

I used smoothwall on a 122mhz 24mb ram pc for about 2 months. It was great and had loads of features.

Its so easy to install too. No knowledge of linux needed.

Do you want me to start swearing about my router now, or shall I save it for later?

hehe, don't blame the kit if you can't set it up properly ;)

It's child's play. I got a Netgear RT314, running 2 win2k desktops and a linux laptop.

For the other two guys it's no problem, but the router has "known issues" with halflife servers, and with Mirc DCC chats and transfers, which I use a lot.

I've just purchased an adsl router, as despite getting on really well with smoothwall, ive been unable to resolve an issue with rogerwilco blocking certain clanmates, despite setting up the relevant port forwarding rules and asking around everywhere I could. Apart from this problem, smoothwall has been great.
Might be worth looking at IPCOP too btw.

I got an alliedtelesyn cable router, no probs with hl servers. DCC did have problems but then so does everyone behind a firewall. If you need to know how to fix it pm me and ill give you the solution.
