some guy said:
A total ban on smoking inside offices, pubs, restaurants and "virtually every enclosed public place and workplace" throughout England will come into force in the summer of 2007 after a resounding cross-party majority of MPs yesterday rejected last minute compromises designed to exempt some pubs and private clubs.

With smoke-free workplaces becoming "the norm", Ms Hewitt told MPs: "Over time we estimate an additional 600,000 people will give up smoking as a result of this law and millions more will be protected from second hand smoke."

That should cut the 85,000 smoking related deaths a year, pro-ban MPs believe. Scotland and Northern Ireland have already enacted public bans and the Welsh assembly has agreed in principle. Ministers also announced an increase in fines, from a maximum £200 to £1,000 for not displaying ban signs, and from £200 to £2,500 for not enforcing the ban.

ok, are people allowed to smoke in the office? at my place we have a designated area but are you legally allowed to walk round the office with a ciggerette?

lets say you have astma or something, surely there are laws to protect those people?

Most of the places i've worked (all of two! - one office selling glass [st helens glass has the class] and the other in a bank) all of them have been no smoking at all whilst inside the building - if you want a smoke you have to wait for your break then go outside.

Nib Gamah, you are aloud to smoke anywere.

It's either you can't because they don't have sufficiant fire safety equipment or the manager banned it because the smell.

OR they are public

Actually, the conditions for smoking inside/outside a building etc are usually specified by the company. If a company doesn't want you to smoke inside a building, they will tell you so - and if you do so irrespective of the warning, you will face discipliniary action for not following the company's proceedures.

i can see why people want it but i think its going to suck in pubs and stuff, you will have people huddled outside every time they want a fag, people in and out all the time will piss people off, nothing better than sitting for a whole evening in the corner of the local, the only traveling you do is from the bar to the table and piss breaks. will suck to have to go outside.

well on 1st march where i work my company is banning smokeing on the site though prob so they can save money, we will have to go out the gate if we want a cig now.

I think the reason they are bringing this law in is coz its there answer to try stop people smokeing not coz off the harm to others done by passive smokeing.
