Brilliant commentary on this from Charlie Brooker in The Guardian. The last paragraph is particularly apposite:

Charlie Brooker said:
Once upon a time, in between scrawling allegorical fables about lions and wardrobes, CS Lewis said something prescient. "Of all tyrannies," he wrote, "a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies.

The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."

Charlie Brooker is a genius, why isn't he on everything and writing for everyone. The guy needs more credit. Him and Will Self ftw!

Even though we moan about the government, it seems there's not a lot we can do about it.

We can vote, that's about it, but we cannot seem to be able to submit disapproval of them that they'll listen to.

Every year that passes, Labour pass more legislation "for our own good" which serves to piss off the indigenous population and give away more and more liberties to those who don't deserve it.

I'm quite with Trem on the whole "Get outta of England asap" boat.

By the time I leave this country, we'll have chavs running local city councils and all modern courts will be judged by Sharia law and we'll eventually have freedom of speech and expression removed (Pretty much done already).

The UKs a sinking ship.

Oh no, it's legal to treat smokers as second class citizens now because it's not actually discrimination!

Let's not forget that since smokers span all genders/colours/ages it's not actual discrimination against a specific group so it's all legal!

yeah cos they spend more on NHS on smokers than they make from the tax

oh wait, no they dont, the smokers fund a lot more than they use, thats why they wont make it illegal

and if you want to ban "bad" chemicals and drugs thats fine - ill even sign the petition if you want, as long as the first place to go is the bars in the house of commons.. oh, wait, double standards anyone ?

Actually this, like most statistics, was rubbish since it included a very limited amount of smoking realted illnesses if I remember correctly.

Either way there is one thing you can be sure of.....as a smoker you'll be hounded into smaller locations and less of them, you'll also pay more for it too.
