Naked Rambler Stephen Gough has walked free from prison after six years locked up for refusing to wear clothes.

TBH, I support his want to wear (or not wear) what he wants. If he wants to strut around as nature made him then fair enough.

People have served less for assault. Probably murder too...

I don't think our own distaste should be enough to warrant locking a man up for this sort of thing.

If it was more commonplace we'd admittedly have to see a lot of ugly skanks knocking about but there'd be a fair few hotties too. And if we'd grown up with it we wouldn't bat an eyelid. It would probably put paid to body image issues too - no more anorexia.

"Ooooh think of the kids" would probably be the first thought of a lot of parents - and I think it's a non-issue. Kids see weird things all the time and if the sight of a naked man is enough to put your parenting skills at a total loss then shame on you - not him.

Laws legislate for the most broad sense.. So they say offending the public decency and then leave it up to the individual judge / plod to decide if they are contravening it. With precedents set that they have to follow once these things have been tested in court.

In these cases everyone seems to err on the side of well it doesnt offend me but im offended on behalf of those who might be offended .. like all those complaints about the radio thing with russel brand.

Its all stupid and unless you are actually harming anyone then i dont see the problem in running around naked all the time, if thats your bag.

Sounds like a bit of a pillock to me. Its not about the nudity directly, its about societal norms. Like it or not, we are not free to do what we want just because we feel like it, and while I hate the fact that every stupid cunt with a Twitter account and a grudge suddenly has the right to to be offended about pretty much everything, the public nudity taboo isn't exactly new; people have regarded being subjected to other people's dangly bits unannounced as being beyond the pale for thousands of years.

Oh, and I don't regard it as a "think of the children" thing, I regard it as an aesthetic thing. Its bad enough looking at a lot of the public with their clothes on. Imagine some of the fat ugly bastards on your typical high street wandering around in the buff. No-one needs that.

Really. The key word is "unannounced". For example, the Romans had plenty of places and occasions in public life where "public" nudity was acceptable or even required, but that wasn't the same as randomly walking down the street with your dick out. Same today, there are plenty of places you can be naked in public, even in the UK (although why you'd want to with our weather is beyond me), but Tescos isn't one of them.

Shouldn't there be a difference between societal norms (regulated through social control) and juridical norms (regulated through legislation)? The first is a cultural thing, which means it's relative and as such not applicable to everyone. Legislation does affect everyone though and should therefore strive to be as universal as possible (although this may in fact be an unattainable goal). Not in the least because in today's multicultural society there will always be the question which cultural norms you pick.
