Ok, so I've been watching the ITV program Single of the Year in a kinda related interest type affair. What for you have been your singles of the year?

Definitely not Gareth fucking Gates for starters. Liberty X was the best out of those on show - but it ended up being a showcase for the Pop Idol finalists.

Produced by what looked to be the same team that made PI. Presented by the same pair (Ant & Dec) that presented PI, featuring all three finalists of PI.

3 of the top 4 on RotY were the 3 finalists from PI, despite Darius' single being a dismal failure compared to some, and the other 2 (Gates & Young) being mere covers.

Highlight of the year for me was Rolling Stone magazine proclaiming Britney Spears to be one of the most important women in Rock.

Seriously.

:(

Its a sad fucking world, when it comes to that aint it Sar.

I'm going to nominate a song from a few years back for single of whatever year it came out in :-]

Coldcut - RE:volution.

As for this year, for me it has to be Misono - Konomama.

This is a difficult one as I rarely pay any attention to the singles charts or infact to any singles releases.

Gone are the days of regular decent b-sides.

It'd be between

The streets - don't mug yourself
QotSA - No One Knows
White Stripes - Fell in love with a girl

Doves - There goes the fear.

I rarely buy singles but that one was just class :)

have to agree with Mank here.

Coldplay - The Scientist.

Video is very moving, as is the tune.

The radio version of dont mug yerself is crap.

The full version includes the real lyrics, and has this cool bit on the end.

I came up with another, how about "Shakin' Rock N' Roll Tonight" by the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.

Currently listening to that particular slice of wax, fantastic.

The Paffendorf track is good to listen to, but I remember being heavily shat on by xenon for mentioning that I liked it. I don't really anymore, it does have tres annoying sound samples but it's still a nice uplifting track to hear when I'm at work. And, from a trance point of view (hush, Scooba ;) ) The Theme by Jurgen Vries (Darren Tate) is the most fantastic track I've heard this year. The Opera Song feat. Charlotte Church is also Pretty Bloody Good (TM).

Nngh :)

The Theme was just annyoing anywhere outside of a club, but I see where you're coming from. TOS is better but Miss Church ruins it tbh. Those vocals aren't just annoying but badly mastered too.

Trance tune of the year = Oakenfold - Southern Sun (tiesto remix). Closely followed by Rank 1's 'Awakening' and Oceanlab's 'Clear Blue Water' (ferry corsten mix).

Non-dance stuff; 'A Higher Place' by Royksopp would have to be my highlight. And on a more commercial tip, Jakatta's 'My Vision' and 'Complicated' by Avril Levien (sp...) were pretty decent chart records.

//Edit - Oops, you meant singles... AHP wasn't.

Oh, I was actually serious - I thought it was their latest single and it had passed me by :)
