There's apparently a lot of smoking on The Simpsons.

BTW, the "Homer smoking a joint" episode was DABF10.

yes but kids use programs for role models! homer simpson is a role model.

according to parents anyway. everyone else is a role model except the parent them selves. then they can pass the blame on for a shit job at raising their kids.

"the simpsons ruined my kids life, homer is no role model for the younger citizens of this world!"

Actually, according to a survey a few years ago a significant percentage of US kids would prefer Homer Simpson as a dad over their own. I can't remember how long ago the survey was (2 years, maybe), but the percentage was higher than 50%.

Not that this should get these episodes banned. People who start smoking because a cartoon character does it are pretty stupid anyway. Just thought it was an interesting fact :).

I think its pretty sad that anyone would want a cartoon character to be a role model, particularly Homer Simpson. I find it particularly sad that kids who are already within a normal, stable, and loving family dynamic would even contemplate wanting a different father.

The Simpsons is an entertaining cartoon show. Thats it.

The Simpsons may reflect microcosmic American society to the extent that a number of people can identify and apply certain aspects of the show with elements of domestic real life. I myself have never identified anything in the Simpsons with what goes on in my life.

Certain themes in the Simpsons are universal. Homer's love for his family is particularly prevalent.

But my point is that you don't need a cartoon to act as your role model.

My immediate family are my role models. Their qualities and values I hold dear to me and have helped be become a better person. They have helped me in the past, they guide my thoughts and actions now, and they will endure after their death and be the benchmark for old fashioned family values which I hope will help my children tell the difference between right and wrong.

Be the person you know you can be.

i dont really think i have a role model. my parents are chilled people, grew up learning by my own mistakes and learning what i could find my self. in their oppinion that was their best way. i got arrested when i was younger. they didnt go mental, of course they were angry. but i damn learnt the best way there is and have never done anything to land me in a cell again.
i also got stupidley drunk when i was 13 with my mate and we ended up in hospital. i had to phone my parents out of a party to come home and get us. were they angry? no. did i learn a lesson? yes, u fucking believe i did.
etc, i think you know where i am going with it.
the only thing i took from there is the fantastic ability to manage financies propley.

In my humble opinion The Simpsons series started out as a really funny animated cartoon series, and not much more. Not knowing what drove the powers-that-be behind it, I assume they were out to entertain people/make money.

Over the years since it started to air, The Simpsons has become a not-so-insignificant factor in terms of what influences people. This is due to the series' enormous popularity, with ensuing cartoon-to-reallife vagaries that have manifested themselves in people... acting like the Simpsons.
Therefore it's quite reasonable to proclaim that if people like to smoke nowadays, it might be due to having watched a lot of episodes of The Simpsons, or maybe just the episodes (which are plentiful) in which someone is smoking.

I somewhat agree with him, the simpsons have very much become part of a lot of peoples lives, most people can name characters, whether they have watched the simpsons or not, they are very much the first american family. if homer smoked all the time then i think it would be seen as normal by some people, just the same as if you see your parents smoke. and no that doesnt mean if homer was a gun totting serial killer it would be seen as normal :)
