simple CPU question

XP2800+ 333 or p4 2.4 800/HT

both will have 2x512mb of 2700 or 3200 depending on which one i choose

does the extra FSB and the hyperthreading warrant the 30 quid price difference even though the PR says the XP would be quicker?

also kinde depends on what mobo you pick,
Dual channel DDR will add to the performance of the athlon

but even without Dual channel DDR, the athlon should be faster overall, but on some apps it might be a bit slower

sorry yeah, the athlon board whould be a dual chan DDR (abit nf7-s 2.0)

do the p4 800 boards not do dual chan ddr?

yeah they do, thats why if you would take a cheaper k7 mobo vs HT p4 mobo at the speeds you give the 2.4 will get verry close to the 2800xp.

btw from what i've seen in benchmarks the AMD rating system is pretty close to reality (give or take about 100mhz)

I currently use AMD 2200+, but if I had the money I'd go for a HT pentium at the moment.
Mainly because the pentium is much less likely to explode if the heatsink falls off (due to some internal throttling if the heat gets too much).

Basically my heatsink became dislodged, and my adm fried in under 1 sec from power on.....
Doom.

Mr.Monkey, i booted mine a few times with all the fans disconected and it just shut down by bios halfway thru boot.

And i must say, in all these years i have never seen a heatsink fall off (and i used to repair pc's for a living)

But a heatsink falling off is, to say the least, a very rare event.

I'd always go with the cheapest option.;)

I'd agree, untill it happened to me.

I was very very unimpressed that the core turned to ash so quickly. I'm gald my psu has it's own offswitch as the chip could have easily melted to my mb,

But you are right, it is rare.

@sibanac
If you've got a heatsink attached to the cpu, there shouldn't ever be the catestrophic overheating that I had, even without a fan (unless the heatsink is inappropriately small), as the surface area for heat dissipation is much larger, hence the heat builds up gradually, allowing the AMD to detect it and reset/turn off. Pentiums do the same, but on a far far smaller timescale. AMD are quoted as saying that the processors will only detect a dangerous heat on increments of 2-3 seconds. A pentium throttles it im 2-3 ms.

There are other reasons I'd go with HT tech, mainly because it's very very sexy. I also like the p4 mounts, easier imo to fit heatsinks.
I've just generally had a few problems more with my amd's than my pentiums over the years.

Basically if cost is an issue, go with amd. If I had the cash, my next upgrade will be a pentium most likely.
HT gives me a hard on.

I've been looking for a little upgrade and Yeah HT looks mighty fine.
On the other hand the Hammer will be out soon and 64bit looks even more sexeh then HT
