I think they're trying to scapegoat him, but he should be sacked for being an asshat anyway.

Its a nice way of deflecting attention from the activities of thieves.

He should have resigned last year when his own dubious expenses came out - instead he was left to run the enquiry into his own expenses.

He also screwed up letting the police into the commons then put all the blame on his assistant.

It is not the speakers job to court controversy or to engage in attacks on individual MPs - he should go immediatly!

Did anybody hear Jeremy Vine on radio 2 today, they were talking about this subject and they got some old toff former MP to defend him. Some of the guys comments were shocking when he was first asked to defend why he spent £18k on a bookshelf.

When someone asked about expenses (before it all kicked off) they got told to shut up and not rock the boat. He is guilty of trying to cover it up.

Yes he should do. So should half of them but unfortunately due to the retarded way our democracy works its unlikely any will go until the general election, unless criminal proceedings are brought against them or they are booted out by the leaders of the party. Cameron has said (said!) he will do that Gordon the **** has not said anything like that yet.

That is exactly what I was thinking when I was hearing it on the radio today.

Nice smokescreen Gordon, I'll be toasting your exit next general election, you fucking ****.

Clearly he should. He must have somehow hidden his Glaswegiousness during the electon process. His £16,000 per annum expenses for Tennants Super is objectionable as it's fucking grim stuff. A real speaker would have spent it on Pimms.

Speaker's been a tool about this expenses crap but if parliament think that ganging up on him will make this go away they're dillusional.

At least we don't have a SISO system like Brussels yet.

Nail / Head situation there Tom.

But the cockmaster should still stand down. Or be put down.

Actually this isn't Brown trying to cover things up, indeed its one of the worst things that could happen to him right now. Current Speaker was a Labour MP.

The current speaker has been unpopular since he was given the post, and now the Tories and Lib Dem's see it as the perfect opportunity to kick him out and put one of their own people in whilst, at the same time, giving another kick to Labour and its incompetence.

For the Tory and Lib Dem main party, and also the Lab back-benchers, its a great way to stop the current deluge of front page scandals.

But to be honest, he is a terrible speaker, he is awful at his job and has an abhorrent attitude. At least if anything good comes out of these expenses scandals, it will be his removal.

He's managed to previously dodged the bullet back when his own expenses caused a little drama session last year, a unspoken agreement was made basically agreeing that he'll step down at the next general election. At the moment he makes a perfect scapegoat to draw the flack allowing PM's to potentially pass buck on to him, or in the very least halt a weeks worth of uncomfortable headlines.

So he's leaving, good riddance! What's the betting he keeps his £100k payout, peerage and £1.4 million pension pot, and will still try to pass his seat to his son! I thought socialists didn't believe in the aristocracy!

TBH he should be strung up from a lamp-post with piano wire, along with a significant portion of the other 645!

Socialists don't believe in anything that gives unfair advantage to people who aren't them :)

He had to go, although so do most the MPs in current government but sadly there is a lack of alternatives at the moment.
