quite, i am all for helping the less fortunate, those that can't work for whatever real reason, or the mentally ill etc. what i don't like doing is paying more because perfectly sane and able bodied people decide to get completely hammered all the time because "its alright there is a massive expensive safety net for when i go to far"

There is far to little self responsibility (whether its always been like that i dont know) people should be held accountable for their actions while us that behave ourselves can continue to do so without them.

You missed Raven's point in the most complete manner ever.

How exactly do retarded people come into this, as far as I know I don't see many of them going out and getting absolutely bloody sloshed.

We're on about DRINKING here and people TOO STUPID to know when to stop.

Raven was pointing out to let Darwinism run it's course on people who really are thick enough to think "Oh, i'll take that 25th pint and i'll be reet".

Stupid is as stupid does.

Where is the moral obligation to help these morons?

Fair enough with retards, that's all fair and dandy since it isn't their fault they're like that, the people drinking themselves into oblivion i'm sure are quite well aware of the dangers of excessive drinking, they just however choose to ignore it.

I would have to say you missed my point. What im stating in my previous post is that there is no difference between someone that is an alcoholic and someone that is handicapped in a more traditional way - they both need help because they do not have full control over their actions. Raven talked about it being darwinism to let people drink themselves into oblivion without society trying its best to help them - should we then also accept a society where people born f.ex. blind get no help at all?

But alot of people *cannot* help themselves from going over the line - it is then that society needs to step in and say "no more, for your own good".

Which is where the law that states it is illegal to serve alcohol to inebriated people comes in. Taxation doesn't cure anything other than a government cash deficit.

I say make alcohol tax free and stop treating alcohol induced accidents/illnesses in hospitals.

Natural selection will do the job for us.

not a bad idea, but id go with 3 strikes and your out, so if your a habitual tard, rather than a one off, they can charge you for it, or make you a low priority, so you have to sit in casualty for 8 hours.

i think its partly due to the safety net effect. i get drunk, fall down, break my head open, here comes the nice ambulance man which costs me nothing (at that point, i know its tax subsidised:p) . if it cost you 300 quid on top of everything i bet people wouldnt do it so much

Working in the trade I believe that the government should do more to protect retailers of alcohol. While I now work in an enviroment where we have very little issue with underage purchases and certainly no inebriated customers - our stuff is too expensive - I always try to ensure that I refuse alcohol to people who are under the influence.

This has resulted in previous jobs among other things in the following: Windows bricked, water bombs filled with muddy water (thank god), a man refusing to leave and wetting himself and numerous physical threats.

The one time the police seemed in the slightest bit interested was when a couple of polish guys had bought some vodka from me and sold it to a teenager a street or two away. This was deemed as my fault despite my protestation that Polish guys buying vodka could not in any way be construed as out of the ordinary.

In my time with that company I barred a lot of people for attempting to buy alcohol for minors - the worst people being the single mum who brings little Johnny into the shop and asks him to pick out what to take to the park to have with his mates so he doesn't bother her for the evening.

That said, I don't know of many people who would refuse to serve someone who is drunk - especially in pubs. I have never been told that I've had too much to drink even when it's been obvious that I'm completely wasted. How can any establishment let four people order 20 shots each in a single round? But I have done it (when I was younger).

24 hour drinking hasn't made much of a difference to our drinking culture as far as I can tell, it just happens later now. We are no where near to being anything like other countries with drinking cultures and I don't think anyone has an answer for it either.

and as the great WC Field's once said......

"Some weasel took the cork out of my lunch..."

"How well I remember my first encounter with The Devil's Brew. I happened to stumble across a case of bourbon--and went right on stumbling for several days thereafter."

"Back in my rummy days, I would tremble and shake for hours upon arising. It was the only exercise I got."

"Say, Mr. Fields, I read in the paper where you consumed two quarts of liquor a day. What would your father think about that?"
WC: "He'd think I was a sissy."

"During one of my treks through Afghanistan, we lost our corkscrew. We were compelled to live on food and water for several days."

And that's their problem. I've done plenty of stupid shit when drunk in my time, and when I've woken up in a ditch I haven't blamed anyone else or thought "something should be done", other than "I should buy more Nurofen". And new pants.

Not read very far yet but I agree. Why the fuck is this anyone's fault except the drunkard ? Noone forced them to get drunk. I've done st00pid shit in my time when drunk but it never occured to me to blame anyone but myself.

Country. Dogs. Etc...

:/

P.S. All this shit about cut-price booze in supermarkets has me worried. Shouldn't we be celebrating a product that's cheap in Britain ? Do we just ask to be taxed based on whatever current media spook-out is en-vogue ?

You believe tax on flying is to really to make people think, hang on, I'll have a holiday in Skegness instead?

What's wrong with Skegness? You'll have a great time here if you survive the car journey.

We spent a week there this summer - nice place and very friendly people - I reccomend the seal sanctuary and the general amusements - good weather helped a lot too :)

Oh ffs, someone invoked Godwin's law.

This is a classic intarweb arguement tbh, which is why I won't get involved. Both sides have fundamentally different views of the role of government, and will never meet in the middle.

many fond memories in that place, some unpleasant ones too.

Anyway back on topic the last time I was wangoed was about March this year, I choose not to drink because I have better ways of relieving my stress and chilling out after a hard day(Not just wanking). What makes me laugh is when people say I'm strange or not normal because I choose not to drink.

On a side note is it the popular thing now for wankered fuckwits to kick car wing mirrors off?

My dads has been done once, mine was done over the weekend (always seems to be friday night) and a guy at work has had it done to him too. Is this a new 'Happy slapping' type shit?

Back in my fresher days, I used to run up and down the street drawing giant penises on the driver side front window, worked especially well in the depth of winter. Always imagined the owner getting up in the morning, turning the car and heater on, driving to work, and all of a sudden a giant penis appears in front of him.

I actually got a mention in the student newspaper for this, as an unknown of course.

But i've never been big on property damage, doing stuff like that is just stupid :/

I enjoy writing naughty words in the ice on peoples cars. Especially ones which are obviously owned by sensitive girls (pink ford KA) :D

I had someone puke on my windscreen, in my air vents, roof and back window once. Fucking stunk when the blower was on anytime after that.

Purple it was too!

I dont even want to know how they managed to do that, unless they were puking out of a window above the car or something.

My friend had the wing-mirror thing done to him outside the club we worked at in Birmingham. The thing was though, the police actually caught the asswipe that did it and left a note on the windscreen telling the story and how to get in touch with them and his insurance company - it was one of the only times I've been impressed with the police in recent times. :)

No window above the car. Must have puked a few times. Plain grotty bastards tbh.
