Rooney up for world award

Wayne Rooney scored a hat-trick on his Manchester United debut
Career stats: Wayne Rooney
Wayne Rooney has been shortlisted for the Fifa World Player of the Year award which will be decided in December.

Rooney, 18, is one of 10 players from the 35 contenders who play their football in the Premiership.

The teenager's Manchester United team-mates Ruud van Nistelrooy, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs have also been nominated for the prestigious honour.

Thierry Henry, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, David Beckham and Michael Owen are also on the list.

Rooney burst onto the world scene with his impressive performances at Euro 2004 where ehe scored four goals.

He captured the imagination as he helped England to the quarter-finals where he had to limp off injured in the first half before England went on to lose on penalties.

Rooney moved from Everton to Manchester United during the summer and recently returned to action in spectacular style by scoring a hat-trick on his United debut against Fenerbahce in the Champions League.

Only Ronaldinho has a realistic chance against Henry

Most of them are in just to make up the numbers!

Ronaldinho for me - this guys is different class and has turned Barcelona into a top european team where they should be.

Ahhh so that makes him a candidiate, a player who plays OK for about 6 / 7 matches SURLEY Should be up there!!

Henry for me, although Ronaldhinio will push him close, and maybe FIFA Will look at Barcelonas success coming 95% down to him, whereas Arsenal have a list of great players, but tbh has to be Henry!

Some of those choices are just stupid...hopefully Henry will win I think he deserves it.

There should only really be 3 on the shortlist.

Ronaldinho.
Andrej Shevchenko
Kaka

with maybe Adriano and Henrik Larsson as outside bets.

There are a lot of silly choices in there tho. Drogba, Rooney, van HorseFace, Beckham, Owen and that Greek guy instantly spring to mind.

The shortlist is pretty skewed year in year out. There are some very odd choices in there. Owen? Come on.........

Henry should get it. Thought he was unlucky to have missed out last year. Dodgy international form will probably count against him though.

After scoring a 35 yard bullet of a free kick at the weekend then following it up by dribbling from his own penalty area, past 3 defenders before slotting it into the back of the net, I honestly think Adriano should get it. He is the greatest player on the planet at the moment.

Odd isn't it how we applaud how footballers from poverty stricken countries can use football as a way to earn success and make something of their lives, but when an English lad does exactly the same we chastise him. He may not have had a great upbringing and doesn't have the capacity to become a scientist or doctor, so this means he can't be good at something else?

Get real. He has a talent, let him use it.
Perhaps concentrate on trying to achieve something rather than berate other peoples achievements.

oblimov is Scottish, plays DAoC and I've never seen him post in here before - what the fuck does he know?

Anyway, not seen much of Adriano but I saw his goals in Copa America and some of his goals for Inter and he looks quite a player. However, Henry's been performing consistently in the Premiership for the past few years and deserves some recognition. Admittedly, he sometimes fails to live up to his reputation in international football but you can't overlook what he's achieved.
