Anybody watched "shops robbers and videotape" on itv yesterday, what a bunch of druggers.One begger made £100 in 2hrs.

I read someone that beggars in Cambridge (where I live) can make £50 an hour....

I was homeless for a while when I was 17. And since then, I have only bought one copy of the Big Issue. Why? Cos when you are genuinely homeless, you find out that the people out on the streets saying that they are homeless are mostly alcoholics, cadging you out of cash just so they can get pissed more, skag heads, and people just blatantly taking the piss. I knew people that left their middle class loving families and left them distraught, so they could live "in the trees" and in squats, and sell the Big Issue, people who all they needed to do was call home and they'd get money, a roof over their heads, and whatever else they wanted. Which they did, when it suited them. When I was genuinely, no other choice, homeless, this grated a little.

There are people out there that genuinely need to beg I suppose, but to this day, I can't say I've met more than one.

Yeah Damini, I had kind of guessed it was the case, not many homeless people can afford £100+ hairstyles !

My wife is a sucker for these people, I fondly remember arguing with her about giving a nearby tramp "50p for a cuppa tea", she then watches as he takes our 50p and then walks up to the next person and asks the same thing, right in front of us, as if to say "fool ya sucka".

It always has been people taking advantage of generousity, I was on the Tube standing behind two loud backpackers on the escalator once, I got the the platform sat down and started reading my paper, and was interrupted by a familiar figure, sans backpack, holding out his hat for donated coinage ! They joined the same train with me later, reunited with their backpacks, I assumed they did this as a matter of course at every station.

Out of interest Damini, did you contact any charities whilst you were homeless, just interested to know (I have a few friends in that "business") ?

Athiest that I am, Christian Aid really helped me out. I hadn't even realised this place existed, until I was in the Social and they said they wouldn't give me any money (apparently your parents have to write a letter informing the social that they have indeed thrown you out of home, and please can the social give you money). I burst into tears and a tramp showed me to this little mystery door I must have walked past a hundred times. Inside was the christian charity place, and the man working there gave me orange squash and got in touch with someone who managed to sort out some income support for me. Funny that. They wouldn't give me a penny, and then some voice on a phone intervenes, and suddenly I have a cheque waiting for me.

It was a serious Through the Looking Glass moment though. A secret door, and on the other side, all these tramps playing chess and back gammon and drinking Robinsons.

The only shelter where I was was a men only one, so I stayed in a squat for the most part.

Aha I've found the answer for why Kenny is soo messy ;)

If you think about it stealing is easy money...steal a couple of DVDs sell em for £10 each and thats £20 for less than 5mins work.

Aye when i see these guys in the streets, i dont like lookin at em, coz they give you this stare which just makes you think.. gah i hate that

Heh, cheeky :) I am compulsively untidy, I must confess, but I am trying to be a reformed character.

I didn't watch this programme, but I don't think I really needed to. It's wrong begging, and I resent it, especially when you can see that most of them are blatantly skagged up or reeking of bevvyness. I've got really quite cold hearted about it all.

And exactly the same line here somewhere. Very odd games being played. Personally don't understand the motives behind it all, but there you go. If we turn it into an interesting talk, I personally don't care how many times its been bantered about.

Heh, changed'em now. Must've been something to do with the site getting a makeover when I was away, with the profile options mistaking BST for GMT, or something like that.

There are people that abuse the system (as with everything) but there are ALOT of people that do genuinley need the help which unfortunately due to the system (as it were) being so shit don't really receive it.

Having worked as a 'Housing Advisor' in a homeless unit I've seen both people from both ends of the spectrum and due to the housing act etc been unable to help them :/

Um, not really sure what this has to do with anything ... :|
