Sharing Connection

I got a really big problem. Im sharing my connection at home with my little sister and for some reason she wants to use her damn webcamera all the time when im playing daoc, so she can see her boyfriend while chatting to him

Now im wondering, are there any program that can evenly devide our connection, so that she got 50% and I got 50%, cus when she switches on that webcamera she sucks up all upstream, leaving me with terrible lag....

Plz need help badly

You require:

1 Screwdriver, and an excuse to get your sister out of the house for atleast half an hour.


Step 1.
Unscrew the webcam.

Step 2.
Break stuff, try not to be too obvious incase it gets taken back. Try to make the damage seem like 'wear and tear' (e.g. twist cables until they snap)

Step 3.
Reassemble camara


I had a slightly similar problem with my younger brother playing his generic crap (re: music - if you could call it music) so loudly the floor was literally shaking. I set the volume to a slightly more acceptable level and then neatly cut all the wires leading from the volume controls to all the other pretty boards. Worked quite nicely, and i've yet to be caught

Unless your ISP supports it you're pretty stuffed, best hope is to ask your sister's boyfriend to reduce the quality of the video so that it's less than the total bandwidth of the connection.. Are you on cable/dsl or dial?

Dont think that will work, they using MSN to cam with... We on Cable, 1mbit down and only 128 kbps up

Easy way to do it would be to drop down her network connection speed so it can only go at half the speed of your internet connection, an ugly hack but it'll work

just install this on her comp and set it to ½ speed, voila. and if she asks just tell her not to halt it because its to reduce lag and alot of technical BS.

if she does know what it does offer to put it on your comp as well (just not using it ofc).

if either of these doesnt work just invoke your veto right as a big brother

Try here for what ur looking for. You may find something out that could help. Appart from isolating the webcam protocol on the router and disabling it, can't think of anything.

Umm... have you asked her to stop doing while you're playing/reduce image quality? Might be a start

Failing that, start a fight. Nothing says "Stop doing that. Now." like a broken nose.

I'm hessitant to subjest this, but if this is going to end in tears, then so be it. Get a lolly pop stick, some cellatape and the usb end of here webcam. Carefully take a small peice off and carefully lay it on a pin inside the plug-in. Use the lolly pop stick to jam it down secure. You can use paper clips or any implement thats thin enough, but you must make sure that the cellatape has been inserted over at least one pin (central ones for preference. trim any excese and then plug back in. If done right, they wont know the difference, other than it doesn't work.

The other option is to pull away the rubber seal around the plug in and disconect the pins with a craft knife (it can be done, but force is required). Using a hairdryer on max on the lens for 30 mins should do it as well (also on the plug in. Leaves no mark and will screw up the visual quality no end).

Like i've said before, working in tech support and repair hasn't left me jaded at all.
