Was updating my list of registered shareware codes, and got to wondering what shareware other peeps have actually shelled out for (rather than just picked up a serial from some warez munkey).

I guess my list is pretty similar to others, but here goes:

Gamespy (redundant now I have ASE)

There are others, but they're generally not used anymore.

Hmm...

I've paid for The All-Seeing Eye (cos it's great), and I made work buy WinZip 7.

I paid for Gamespy

Everything else I generally use as shareware, ad based ones I block the ads for with using the good ole windows hosts file :)

Oh btw CuteFTP blows, get SmartFTP from www.smartftp.com cos its free and way better.

I hope you know CuteFTP is spyware infected (as shareware), as are the popular download managers Go!Zilla and GetRight.

An older, but completely free and non-spyware FTP program is LeechFTP, which does the job.

A spyware-free Download Manager is Download Mage, again older software but does what it says (actually I think they have started regularly updating it again).

Shareware is okay, but keep out the spyware.

I do occasionaly feed the munkey myself, but not for shareware.

I hardly use cuteftp, instead found a nice proggy called FTPExplorer which is freeware.

The trick with the hosts file is an old one, but still good :)

The program doesn't do anything extra, but you get a warm fuzzy feeling knowing that you've rewarded the developer for his efforts.

Tsk, I thought most people knew this!

You make a note of where the ads are coming from, and add the address to your hosts file, like so (adserver is just an example):

127.0.0.1 adserver.com

Doing this means that whenever a request to the ad server goes out, it's directed to your own system (127.0.0.1 is localhost), which returns nowt, nada, nichts.

Tada, no more adverts :)

What a simple but effective little no-ad procedure. It's obvious when you tink about it, eh?

i hope your not using it for ripping CDs! the codec it uses is absolutly awful. when you download an mp3, and listen to it, you can often tell if it was ripped with shite like musicmatch.

www.exactaudiocopy.de < best ripping program out there, and its non comercial, made by some german student :)

hell, to register it you just send him a post card of where you live, and he even asks that you send a nice postcard ;)


edit: tidied spellings, the thought of the 'xing' codec musicmatch uses made my hands shake at the time..

Thanks for that tip - my audiograbber seems to reject it's key after a week or so.

Kind of puts my off paying for it if it does that.;)
