Setting a Q2 server

Sometimes play a m8 at Q2 on public servers but he has a modem 300 ping and i have isdn 50 ping so advantage to me .
To try and get round this he set a server on his PC so his ping is then 10 to 15 then i join but my ping is up to 350 with bad packet loss not the 50 i was expecting .
If i set up a server and he joins his ping is still 300 and plays like any other server.
We only live a few miles apart and use the same telephone exchange .
Anyone know why my connection to him sucks while his is normal for a modem .

First off. When you say exchange, are you meaning ISP or just local phone exchange. As you use an ISP to log onto the internet (as you probably know ;) )and you may have to make serveral hops from your ISP to this server. So find out if you both use the same ISP. Then goto the dos prompt and

type:tracert (your friends IP) then press (enter)

and providing the server is up or he is also logged on the internet, see how many hops it is to him, and tell him to do likewise when you are online. You might find that due to routing/ISP etc that you make more hops than him or visversa. To find out your IP, incase its been dynamically assigned (in the dos prompt again type) :ipconfig (enter). Also hardware might be a problem but im not too sure on that. Anyhow the above should give you an insight into how far and how long it takes to route between the two of you and that may be causing the excess ping. There are some other tips but me's only just woke up. Respond with how the above went.

Nice godanotherform.

Just the proggy (for dos) is winipcfg not ipconfig as you said. Hope he's not read it yet :)

As a result of following godanotherforms advice you may wanna do 2 things. Get on the same isp. Get a local isp.

Windows can find your nearest isp but the only way I know how to make it is if you haven't got one already :(

Any one know how to bring that prompt up if you have? Don't think it's on 'Make New Connection' in the Dial Up Networking folder but you could have a look.

Acid u there.

On mine (Win98) it works both ways, which is strange as winipcfg is correct. I am duel-booting at the moment with NT, i wonder could that be the reason?

Ive treble checked and winipcfg brings up the details in a GUI format whereas ipconfig brings it up in dos.

Bah humbug to the lotta ya. :)

What ya wanna do is set up a modem->modem, (or in this case ISDN) game and not faff with the internet at all.

One person needs to create a dial-up server, (in the Connections menu of Dial-up Networking) and the other person connects to that, (obviously, you'd be better off setting up the server on the hpb's machine as far as ping goes).

I've got a "How to" guide nestled somewhere on me HD that I half-inched from planetquake a year or two ago, drop me an email if ya wanna copy, ('bout 350k zipped) @ rich_r@bigfoot.com

Nice.

Only problem is, I've only got one person mesell locally who could be a worthy opponent. The others are furthur afield, meaning a direct connection to them would cost a bloody fortune.

May be good for Chimpy there but in general it's not a good option. Specially as most folks are used to an unmetered connection of some variety now.

Do you mean a leased line?

Are you talking about WIN98? I cant do that on my version?
