Server recommendations

Hello all.

I'm very new to Counter Strike, but I do enjoy playing it whenever I get a few minutes free. Up until very recently, I've been playing it against computer enemies. This has been a very good way to learn the game, but I'm finding that I can predict what the computer opponents are going to do.

Looking for some better games, I did venture out onto some internet servers but, I must admit, felt a little intimidated by the attitude and language of the other players.

Are there any servers that are a little more easy going than the 'hard-core' gaming ones I seem to have found. A server that caters for new players would be ideal.

Thank you

Denise

Well, I was a newbie not so long ago. In fact the way I play sometimes, I think I still am.
I used the Barrysworld servers, found them to be a bit intimidating at first but they are probably the best ones around. Don't mind the other players, all they can do is shout at you after all.
If you get Gamespy 3d from http://www.gamespy.com and add the Barrysworld master server to it, that'll cut down the 10,000 or so servers to the ones that are Barrysworld only.
Saves you a lot of time and trouble.
If you get stuck, reply back and I'll help out.

Good luck :)

Not to sound rude DC but playing bots is one thing, playing people is totally different. I've seen most the bots out there and not many come close to doing what a human player can do :)

Welcome to the scene DCS :)

If you really want to progress your ability in the game, then I would stick around on Barrysworld servers. As Stazbumpa said, it may be intimidating, but after a while you'll get better and start making an impact on the scoreline. Also, just ignore the player chat text at the bottom if they start being obnoxious. I know I certainly do :)

That reminds me actually. They *really* should introduce some kind of ignore <player number> option. I know it barely gets used on IRC (I certainly rarely use it) but I think it really would be usefull

Thanks for the replies people

Hubby already has Pingtool set up on this computer (I haven't seen gamespy, but he reckons it's similar), so I can find servers ok.

I think the ignore option is a good idea. It's not as if anyone takes any notice of orders, etc, typed in the screen, so it wouldn't hurt to lose the 'input' from a player or two.

I know that playing bots gets easy Embattle (I thought that's what I said :)), but at least they don't go off the deep end if shot.

I'll try out the Barrysworld servers this afternoon if I get a chance.

Thanks again

The guides are very good indeed.

I looked for the locations of the spy-camera monitors, but it doesn't figure in the guides.

I know of only 2 maps where the monitors are, though nobody seems to use them. One is in the truck in Assault, the other is in the upper hostage room in arabstreets (I think...the one with the arab music). Are there any more? I found them very handy, especially on Assault, where a T sniper could be located (they don't seem to move much).

I don't get a chance to play that much, but if you give me your server address, I'll try and pop along some time.

Thanks :)

The BW bunch are a friendly lot :) but you will always get some juvenille people who call people newbies for one reason or another. If i am there i will stick up for ya as I know what it was like, I uninstalled CS the day i got it because the first 3 servers i went on i got kicked from for being a newbie but then a mystical force made me reinstall it a few weeks later :).

You will also get a lot of good people to learn off from BW i learnt most of my tactics from watching the likes of MartialYin and other good people from the fixed camara location.

Bots are very usefull for offline praccy, I use POD bot (it seems more intelligent than your average CS player). It does all of the objectives plants the bomb, defuses the bomb, camps, and you can also kill all the bots off when you die so you don't have to wait 5 mins while they run around looking for each other. One thing that makes this bot stand out from the rest is that if it sees you and you dck behind something, whereas most bots carry on moveing between the waypoints, this bot actually comes back and looks for you, if it sees a better weapon than the one it is carrying it will go and pick it up, and you can also command your fellow bots to do things useing the radio commands like "Team fall back" or "Cover me" or "follow me" etc.

I use it to increase my awareness of the maps and reaction times. They do become a bit predictable but you can lay down new waypoints by looking at an area and typeing something in the console.

Nothing beats playing a real human but a bot can really make a difference. Just my oppinion.
