Servers seem a lot better now. Or is that just my imagination!?

How come nobody is ever on the 20 player one?

It is better mostly, though I have had some mighty choke figures now and then. (50-60 choke!) It may be just my net connection at that time mind you. ]I have seen pings up to 110 again last night too, but I can live with that.

The Chateu/havana maps lag the fuck outta me (150'ish ping!) all the time

Why is it with the big CS maps valve just cant get it right? All the new additions to the standard maps of late.. St0rm, Torn, and these new two ones... are server cpu hungry monsters... yet in other mods big maps dont really pose the same problems. Sure having some nice eye candy maps may well be some peoples choice... but most gamers want decent balanced structured maps dont they? not rah textured washing lines in a cuban slum?

Dare I mention custom map server again? :/

On the server lag issue, lag spikes are generally gone, but I still have a much higher ping ploss/choke situation on Barrys I'm afraid (same as the Q3 servers I'm sorry to say... Jolt are better still)

I don't understand how a map can 'lag' your computer. Are you certain its not just the extra detail of the map that reduces your frames per second?

[limited understanding]maps which are big usually have high r_speeds this means the server has to do more work and causes the clients to feel lagged[/limited understanding]

I'm not sure that the "size" of the map matters. I think its more down to textures and detail methinks. I remember when Estate first came out it had very high r_speeds and they re-did it to lower the r_speeds. Assault and Siege are both fairly large but give good frame rates. I've just upgraded, but previously Torn and Storm were like PowerPoint presentations, now they are fine.

I really think people confuse net "lag" with fps "lag". In fact im sure of it.
I still hear people say, "oh office, its a laggy map." Correct me if Im wrong, but a map cant affect your net connection can it? I can understand it slowing down your fps rate, in which case you need to deal with that as a computer problem - I still cant understand people setting their fps at 100 then going down to 50 in a fire fight. Why not set at max 50 all the time, it'l be much smoother .
Having said that, I wonder whether the bigger maps effect the server causing higher pings? Is that possible anyone ?
Ive been playing DoD on that jolt 32-man server, it is fucking wild. But my fps falls to 50 from 60 sometimes when i see a lot of people, (and on there it is a lot of people ! ), but I have a top computer, how do people play ? I was talking to someone with a xp1400/gf3 -which is quite a bit slower than my pc- and they said they had no problems. BUT , they had a cable connection whereas I have isdn. That kinda leads me to answer my own question maybe ?

I have adsl.
Before u/g my PC (celery 500, voodoo 3 3000) some maps were unplayable. After u/g (gf3 ti500, athy 1700xp) all the maps play fine.
There is always a bottleneck somewhere, i had the connection but not the processing power. I suppose it must work that if you have a storming PC but shite connection you will also have probs. Although I didn't notice much of a change when I went from isdn to adsl, so I guess processor power is what you need.
