Security lock on websites?

Can anyone recommend a gateway site that you can go through to ensure that online transactions are on a secure server?

I think I used to use Safeweb but they've changed the site...

Safeweb always struck me as the biggest conspiricy of the lot. I mean, surely the operators were laughing as people typed in their emails, passwords and credit card numbers and sent it to their server?
