Evening,

Don't know if anyone knows but there is currently a distributed cure for cancer running in conjunction with Oxford University and United Devices.

I have just joined as my mum has cancer and I figure that we are more likely to find a cure for cancer in my lifetime than some little green aliens (Ted doesn't count).

The agent uses all idle processing time on your box and even when you work on it you don't notice it is there.

The agent can be downloaded from (Windows only atm) http://members.ud.com/download/

If you want to join mine and Ted's team click the following link after signing up:

Best regards

DBs

Utter bullshit imo, utter waste along the lines of SETI. I'll stick to actually MAKING a difference by donating.

I make donations as well but I don't see this as utter bullshit. This is valuable research into how proteins bind with molecules (I think I am not a rocket science).

I do think SETI is a waste of time, so what if we detect life, we can't talk or get to them, whereas this could save lives.

Care to expand on your reasonings?

I'm not quite sure about this but I'd heard somewhere that the UD Agent was not necessarily doing cancer research, it was just one of the many projects they'd be using your CPU cycles for, initially it was for cancer, but the net has widened somewhat now, I'll try and dig up an article about it.

Not trying to downgrade their work, I'd fully agree its a better diversion than cracking encryption or finding ET.

Dunno if your mum recently got cancer, but if you want to talk about it you can e-mail or PM me as my wife has had cancer (NHL) for the last few years and is currently on the second round of trying to beat it, take it from me a problem shared is a problem halved.

I think whats not understood by the public is that there are many good and effective treatments for cancer. The biggest problem isn't that but people generally not seaking treatment early enough say through embarrassment for bowel cancer or prostate cancer (or in UK being correctly diagnosed).

According to the news the next biggy is prostate cancer. Tis is a difficult beast to treat especially if left as it becomes refractive to current treatments (usually androgens). It is about time it was given a higher profile.

I hope your mum gets better, mine did thanks to good drugs like Tamoxifen and her condition is stabilised. Personally I think its the big Pharmaceuticals that will find the cures but thats not to say this approach is worthless.

I used to have it installed, but found at times it'd just be a slut & grab the CPU which meant i kept pausing it, which was a shame cos it is quite a good idea.

Dunno if they've improved the client since though (oh and Seti _is_ bollocks, the graph is just prettier)

My mum has had breast cancer, which was about 4 years ago, and then about 3 weeks ago was diagnosed with secondary bone cancer which according to the doctors has not progressed into the soft tissues.

Yes, UD are expanding the range of projects but you can opt out of them by updating your profile and selecting which projects you want to participate in.

The thing I like about this is the fact that the results goto Oxford University so we get a looksy at the results.

As for the client Meg, it is better behaved now. I have it installed on several of my machines at home running all the time and its fine although you can set via your profile times when it is allowed to run so you could set it run only run at night etc or on certain days.

I used to have UD Agent installed, but it kept hijacking my CPU, and eventually went on to pretty much nail my windows installation (necessitating a reformat). Got a second PC now tho so I'll stick it on there if it's changed some, that way if it throws a tantrum again it's no big deal.

What does THINK stand for?
THINK is the software that performs the analysis in the virtual screening. The Acronym stands for To Have Information and Knowledge.

Surely that should be THIK? :)

As DBs said in a later post, you can opt out of the other projects and instruct it to work on the cancer research only.

I'll sign up, and give it a shot even on my ancient pc here.

What Embattle says is right, pretty much all my dead relatives that I know of died of one cancer or another, and my Dad now has Chronic Lymphocytic Lukeamia, sooo without advances in this area, it's more than likely to get me too, hopefully not for a while yet, but in the meantime I'll do what I can.
