My missus & I did our padi open-water 1 in Jordan earlier this year, and I can honestly say it's the most mind-blowing experience I've ever had !! We're going to Egypt for a week of more diving in the red sea at the end of October... anyone else around here (scuba, I don't wanna know about muff) dive ?? Got any suggestions on good places for (scuba) diving ?

My Dad Scuba Dives has done all the PADI tests

He went to Egypt last year and while he enjoyed it he didn't like all the damage that had been done to the sea bed.

Where are you staying in Egypt?

I'll ask him if he know any good places...

I did a NAUI course.

You can go scuba diving almost anywhere...

Lake Malawi is suposedly very pretty!

I would suggest somewhere with warm water as the fish are a lot more colourful!

Anywhere in the Med...

Places Like Seychelles(sp) are also good

Malta - Spitfire wreck , some battleship. cant remember its name. Not been

cyprus - helicopter wreck. Not been.

Qatar - Fuck all. stay away, usual assortment of fish, angel, baracuda etc. Live and trained :p

Egypt - mate went to teach out there. had to prove to the chaps that he was competent. not allowed to touch the bottom etc. very very touchy about the damage being done to their reefs. and so they should.

I'm currently hoping to go diving in Northern Scotland next time i return to the UK. be different from this climate :p nice and warm. bit of a poor visibility the times i've been in though

one last thing

I HATE BLOODY JELLYFISH

Used to do it when I was younger, I went to Stoney Cove in the UK in the winter time. Jumping into cold water feels like someone hit you in the face with a hammer. The dive ended as I could hardly move from being so cold.

I hate the sea, it's full of Jellyfish and Sharks. I'm scaring myself even thinking about it.

I was once in a shallow canoe in the sea in South Africa.

I was just beyond the breakers and I looked downwards and saw a huge Sting Ray!

I got such a fright cos if they were able to get there then a shark surely would!! And a Canoe looks like a tortouse to a shark!!

I am petrified of the sea.

Last time I went in the sea was years ago and I wouldn't go past my knees cos I couldn't see my feet any more.

I've been fascinated by the sea ever since I can remember buy just hate going in the water.

When I was tiny, my mum dragged me out to sea in one of them floatation costumes. You know, one of them body suits with the bits of polystyrene in pockets on the outside. Well basically we were out really far and something awful floated past me. It could have been a dscarded bog roll or it could have been some rotten half eaten fish. All I know is that it scared the fucking life out of me and I've hated the sea ever since.

Jaws is one of my all time favourite films. I can't remember if I watched it before I was petrified of the water or not.

I have a thing about sharks...I guess that's my main concern about water. I can swim and everything no probs. I even have goldfish. :)

I own all the Jaws films, Deep Blue Sea etc, I own various shark docus, I even have a sharks tooth necklace that I wear all the time (obviously not in bed, that'd be kind of dangerous!).

I just finished a book written by a guy who survived the sinking of the Indianapolis (the boat that Quint from Jaws talks about....yes he's talking about a real situation).
This guy talks about how he saw officers screaming like girls and get torn to shreds.
He talks about hunting the later and cutting them open, thinking they're dead, only for them to come to life, eat his crew mates and then he watches the body parts fall out of the hole he's just made in the shark.

Nasty stuff.

I'd LOVE to go scuba diving but unfortunatly my deep seated fear of sharks prohibits this. I have quite a bit of respect for those that can just dive in the water and not even think about shark screaming towards them at nearly 30mph, jaws wide open. Ack! Fair play to ya.....

I've done a bit of research on dive sites around the UK and tbh I'm not really tempted... I really don't fancy getting in really cold water, dressed up like a mitchelin man, only to still freeze my nads off & have a visibilty of 5 meters or something...

As for sharks, the Red Sea is pretty safe. The only species of shark in that water (afaik) is the coral shark... so no great whites or tiger sharks or any other really agressive types. The further north in the Red Sea you go, the less likely you are to see any sharks at all, which is a bummer really coz I'd really like to see some while diving. Florida is apparently the place to go if you want to dive with sharks, or South Africa off the Natal coast (gonna do that next year). In the Red Sea, it's mainly coral, pretty little colourful fish & the odd moray (but they don't bother you as long as you're not sticking your arm in their homes...)

There's White's around South Africa, that's where they recorded the footage of the surfer getting attacked by two great whites at the same time. Scary stuff.

Lots of whites around north australia too. But then there's friendly dolphins who've been known to protect capsized sailors from great whites.

There's a beach along the florida coast line (I think) that's had the highest shark attack rate this year. I think it had the highest fatalities but I'm not too sure about that too. It's evening and I'm tired and drunk.

Anyway... Sharks = Scary

Guy went diving, came out the water with a jellyfish wrapped around his neck. needless to say he was stung badly on his neck and hands as he tried to get it off, nothing obvious just swollen neck. few days later went to work, half way through the shift he collapsed. going down the lift he died twice and had to have his heart restarted.

got to hospital turns out he has a brain tumour. He's adamant that the jellyfish caused it.

scary huh?

hehe......no.

on that note. passed my PADI open water course today. now all i have to do is wait for some canadians to return some boots i left behind on site, find my log book and fill it in!!!

was bloody annoying. 12 metres down, going along fine admiring the toilets and mosques. when i get stung on the bloody leg by a jellyfish.

it was the only one i saw at that depth.

also lost my Rock Paper Scissors game four times during the saftey stop. most annoying :D

Scapa Flow is meant to be one of the best diving sites in britain.
