Adaptec aha2940 SCSI Adapter
Intel 10/100 pci network card
pci firewire adapter
Creative soundblaster 128.

Windows XP Pro
Latest 4 in 1 drivers
Latest bios update
Nvidia 21.83 dets.

When I installed the card origionally, it ran no problems. Since it has been removed, and refitted after an OS install, it is giving a

MEMORY ERROR
PRESS ANY KEY

message, press a key and off the pc goes with the rest of its boot-up.

When I checked in the hardware manager, the card was listed as working properly.

Is there any way of forcing into the cards bios on boot-up? similar to pressing CTRL H for the Highpoint bios?

Ive had a scoot around the Adaptec support, but I cant find much to help.

Any ideas.?

not really, but thanks for trying. The problem is, that the Bios cannot be flashed to a later version. I cant get into the bios to alter the settings, and there is no HDD connected to it anyway, so its not a fat32 issue.

bugger.

Try doing a further search through the Technet Website - they might have something more for you.

---- or do you want me to wipe your arse for you too ?

Ouch! That sounds like your problem right there. I'm not convinced that the problem lies with the presence (or not) of the SCSI card. Try removing one or more of your memory sticks. It could be one of them that's at fault and is causing your BIOS to hang when interogating it. At a guess.

Not being able to access the BIOS menu is A Very Bad Thing™.

No, no, no again no, its the Bios on the card that I cant access, not the mobo.

And Laz, you missed a bit.:p

Adaptec are usually CTRL + C to get in, or sometimes they used the old DPT code of CTRL + S

have you checked the adaptec site for more info?

yes I have, but their support system is wank. To ask a question you need a TSID number. To get that (if you dont have the origional packaging) you need to register your product, quoting the Serial number. Done. and then
Sorry we are unable to provide you with a Technical Support Identification Number at present

gahhhh, wankers.

I'll try the CTRL C or S when I get home. Thanks for that.

Ive been told in another thread that CTRL A also works for Adaptec stuff, so I'll try that too.

I always thought it was CTRL+M to access the SCSISelect utility. :/ It tells you on boot-up anyway.

I think I'm overlooking something here so I'll leave.

Well, I tried CTRL A last night, and it worked, at least, it got me into the SCSI Select screen (which isnt actually the bios I guess)
Couldnt find a great deal in there to fiddle with. Its all the drive selection parameters and stuff.

Anyway, on re-boot its now working, so whatever I did, its worked.

Another gh3y question.

If Ive got a 4 connection int scsi cable, and plug one end into the host, and one into the drive, do I need a terminator anywhere?

It depends on whether your drive provides active termination. SCSISelect is intelligent enough to display a message when loading which says 'Insufficient termination on x' Most hard drives will terminate automatically, some backup units (HP DDS, fo example) don't.

Your first drive should be plugged into the very last connector on your SCSI cable. The second drive on the second from last connector, and so on.

Basically, if you're not getting an error and your drives are being detected within about 45 seconds, then you're okay.

OK, cheers m8.

I closed my eyes and plugged it in last night. CTRL A and SCSI Select gave it position 2, rebooted, bios installed, no probs. Fucking brilliant.:D

Checked hardware manager, drives listed (34 gigs of Compaq goodness :) ) but....... (and there is always a but where Im concerned)

When I shut down, the PC rebooted, but stalled at the drive detection :( Disconnected the drive, and it booted no probs, but still wouldnt shut down.

Im going on hoilday agin, fuck it.
