Guys,

A little assistance if you would be so kind.

My dad is having problems with the PC he got (its a pass down from me when I built my new system)

Compaq Presario AMD Duron 900 Mhz
40 GB Hdd
640 MB RAM 100 Mhz
Savage Pro 8mb onboard gfx (shite)
56K modem (Diamond internal)
Old 15" Compaq Monitor.
Windows 2000 Professional

Whats happening :
When he boots up, on about 99% of the time the gfx on screen are screwy. Vertical black lines appear on the bootup screen and flickering continues through the session.

On more than one occasion, he receives a BSOD. Latest error was :

Address 8042D8FE
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL ntoskrnl.exe

If you "wiggle" the monitor connection to the back of the POC, the flickering and black line display gets worse.

We have ran a virus checker and it is clean.
I have reseated ALL of the components

Any suggestions on what could be the problem?

The only thing you can do is try a different monitor, or a gfx card if thats possible. It could be a memory problem.

For all of you having sleepless nights wondering what the problem was :

It was the GFx card. installed an old Voodoo and its working fine.

Thanks Happy (and Wilier)
