Hi, I've got cable but i've heard that you probably should use 1 of those extension cables with your usb modem...

If you can afford it, I think the best solution would be to get an extra phone point installed next to your computer.

Dont ask me why you shouldn't use them ... thats what my mate was told by freeserve....maybe one of the other guys will know.

Leggie.

Bell cable is made out of cheapo alloy conductors (tin is in there I think), so long runs are to be avoided. You can take a few precautions:

If the extension runs over any mains or lighting cables, make sure it crosses at an angle of 90degrees (to reduce any interference, especially spikes from lights being switched on, fridges, washing machines etc.)

Try to have the extension wired in from the back of the socket (a special tool is needed for this, you can't do it without it), the socket/plug interface is normally the first place that oxidisation occurs (and this is what causes plugs/sockets to get noisy).

If you must have an extension cable, don't get a cheap one. On the other hand, don't go mad and get ripped off, just get one with decent plugs/sockets on it.

Oh, one more thing, the first telephone socket in your house will most likely be owned by BT, as will the wire to it, so if you play around and break it, they will not be happy.
