Scary!!!

Resident Evil on the Gamecube.

I've been made to jump once or twice by unexpected things in all my gaming years but Resident Evil is a genuinely scary game.

I play the game while Damini sits on the sofa with me and helps solve the puzzles. We dim the lights and whack up the surround sound. EEK!

There's jumpy moments all over the game and high tension moments as you walk over zombie bodies etc but the one that scared us both shitless was this one...

I'd been wandering around the house for a while, running back and forth between my chest 'o' wonders trying to solve various puzzles and figure out where we'd not been. The biggest problem with the game is the limited inventory. This guy's got pockets so big he can conceal an entire shotgun down his pants without so much as a bulge, yet he can only carry six items???
So..wandering round the house.... I turned to Damini after running past some dead (dead) zombies lying on the ground and was halfway through saying "I suppose I really should be buring these corps...ARGH!!!!"

A zombie literally jumped up and sprinted towards me down the corridor! EEK!! I had a major panic attack and totally forgot what buttons do what. By the time I'd got myself together the zombie was taking some bite sized chunks out of my neck. I threw him off and proceeded to pistol whip him but it wasn't enough. He managed to take several more chunks out of my neck till I expired. :( I had to take a break cos of my heart pumping so fast.

Damini refuses to go to bed straight after we play it. She has to have some "fluffing" before going to bed. heh. Last night it was meant to be an old skool video of the Ulysees (sp?) cartoon but instead she got wrapped up flaming some people on the Codemaster's Dragon Empire's forums. heh.

Anyway. Damn scary game. Play it with a friend!

Silent Hill 2 gave me the creeps quite a bit tbh. Especially indoors, when it's dark, with the flashlight (which looks great).

I have. That's a good game, maybe even a better "game" than Resident Evil is (from what I've playe so far) but it's no where NEAR as scary as Resident Evil has been so far. I think it could well be the camera angles that do it. Most angles in ED let you see the entire room. The angles in RE rarely let you see more than a few square feet of any room or corridor so the fact you can hear a zombie scares the crap out of you. Do you step forward to get the next angle of the corridor and risk walking right into the zombie you can hear? Do you just bring your gun up and fire randomly possibly wasting precious ammo? None of the monsters/zombies in ED come at you with any speed or suprise and defeating them wasn't a matter of skill, it was just a trial and error technique.

RE, so far, just piles on the atmosphere. You can spend 20 mins running around the house solving puzzles and not encounter a single zombie, then all of a sudden, five or ten mins after you've solved a puzzle a zombie will jump out on you from no where. Or a dog will smash through a window. You can walk down a corridor and see the door you want to go through. Except this door happens to be rattling on it's hinges from something you KNOW is on the other side and you have no choice to go through that door cos it's the only route to where you want to go.

The game lulls you into a false sense of security most of the time. It's done really well. At the mo we're playing on easy level. For several reasons...

1. This is my first modern console. All the other consoles I own have games mostly consisting of platform games. So the whole 3d aspect of things is still something I'm getting used to.
2. I tried it on the hard level first. I died really quickly.
3. Damini insisted on it. (after 2.)

If these guy were to make horror movies I think they'd do a very good job of it. They get the tension build ups spot on. You can enter a room and the spooky music will start playing for no reason at all, yet because you've not seen any zombies around for a while, you instantly go from running to walking and check your gun's fully loaded etc etc. It keeps you on your toes. Then just when you think "bah, nothing's going to happen" BAM! A zombie legs it up the stairs after you!

I like this game. :) Damini refuses to play it on her own. heh. She doesn't even like directing the guy around the house back to a typewritter when I need a piss or something. heh.

Just remembered another cool moment....

There's a corridor where you can see the sillhouettes on the wall of the zombies bashing against the windows outside. Every time you run past you expect them to smash their way in and grab you.

Then after solving some puzzle or another you go past again and they've gone. Oh shit. They're coming in any second. so you edge past, gun in hand. Nothing happens.

Then about 15 mins later when you finally get around to going to another room on the same floor of the house, you go through a door and hear loud crashing and smashing. THREE bloody zombies have broken in through windows at an entriely different part of the house.

I ran out of ammo. I had to run like a girl past one of them to get to my ammo box. Not without taking a few bites to my neck first. :/

I read a review of silent hill 3 that said it was pretty damn terrifying, infact so much that the reviewer began to wonder when it became too much for a game. I feel a bit like that in resident evil sometimes -

the character says: "I wonder whats behind this door?" Cue sounds of squelching, screaming and all things horrific.

Damini says: "I don't ever want to find out. I'm not insane. Why the fuck would I open that door? You couldn't pay me to open that door. I'm off to play something that doesn't make my blood pressure actually hurt my eyes."

Resident Evil is scary in a RAARGH ZOMBIE SURPRISE WAY (Saying that they bit when Rebecca has to go up in the lift and gets eaten by the insects is so so so nasty)

Whereas Silent Hill is edge of insanity style stuff. SH2 late at night with the lights out and curtains open = Sitting up with a knife NEVER EVER SLEEPING.

Já, RE isn't disturbing in the same way SH has the capacity to be.

Both the Silent Hills are far more scarey than resident evil but i guess its all down to what scares yah.

Resident evil is shock after shock, scare after scare but i must say i d o prefer the creeping, nasty sort of errrm, 'whats that shopping triolley got a gun in it for' type of fear that sh induces.

However resi zero is damn scary too just in a different way

Comparrison time : If Resident Evil is Scream then Silent Hill is Blair Witch (before u knew what happened in it ;)

Man i Haven't seen that cartoon since I was a kid.

Also on the Resident evil side, I've played and completed them all execpt for Zero as I know no-one with a GC and a copy of REZ Zero. I think the Second one was the easiest, but the first still holds its on against the others, recent;y re-played still makes me a little jumpy I forgot about the Dogs jumping through the window and all the bad acting in the first Act, which what made it very scary.
