Lots of scarey stuff happening to me lately; surprise family, exam results, starting @ new libraryon Tuesday but the biggest thing of all so far is...

...B2 and I are going to start making mortgage applications (hoooooly shiiiit!)

So *hypermerventilation* is there anyone here who can recommend a mortgage provider (UK) and/or has any general tips about buying a house such as stuff to do with legal side of things etc etc

It is all a tad grown up and um well, the best word to decsribe it is overwhelming I think so any helpful advice is welcome :D

Cheers!

My parents always swore by Nationwide when they had a morgage back when I was little so maybe look there, just shop around now really as everywhere is going a bit mental with the recession

There is all kinds of options now. I keep hearing about this you pay 70% and the govt subsides the other 30% of the cost. Maybe look at that, cos thats all i know about it.

Might be a good time to buy a house, prices are certainly lower now.

As far asadvice goes; triple check places and then check again so you won't get any sluggy surprises or stuff falling on your head.

People often go "ooh aah" at a new home and forget to look at things critically.

its true tris but down here they were so freeking slow to even fall that they have only just reached a reasonable level. This is why we decided to move fast because they will probably only be in our price range a short time.

I swear this is one of the most expensive areas in the country.

Where you live is expensive. But everywhere has 'cheaper' areas, you just have to think about what you are prepared to compromise. We have had a mortgage with the Nationwide for 11 years and so far they have been really good. But as ever, shop around and do your research- as I am sure you will.

The market has changed beyond all belief and the old best practice of straight re-payment and fix as long as possible, no longer applies!!!

Good Luck -and keep us posted -you will be fine and it does make sense. It really not that scary and better than giving all your hard earned cash to someone else:D

I'd shop around for the best deal but if you're going to ask for several quotes read this article first. Don't want to be screwing with your credit rating.

Always spend a while shopping around for mortgages ,because it can be a minefield.

If after a few days of looking you are still unsure, go to an independant mortgage advisor. They charge a bit, but it is definately worth doing.

Hai Ez and congrats on deciding to get onto the property ladder :)

We have just started the same ourselves infact i am going to collect the keys to our new house in a couple of hours :) Never thought i would be saying that a few years ago :) but with determination - and a few good doctors - we have done it.

We went with RBS in the end as they had the best deal for us but we used moneysupermarket a few times as well as some other websites. Mouseprice, houseprices.co.uk and plenty of estate agents type webbys. One thing i will say is do your research. The mortgage broker recommended by the estate agents arent always the best option. Some estate agents are more focused on their own interests than yours. Use a solicitor that is independant of the estate agent as well.
We were misled by 2 estate agents before we found a property that was right for us. The first one was quite insistant that we didnt use the solicitor we had appointed as "he can be difficult to deal with" I told him that he doesnt want to be your friend its just business. The second did not negotiate with the seller for me and i found out after my offer was accepted that there was problems with the NHBC guarrantee.
It was all fate though as they say as now we have a much better place at a far better price.

Talk to your own bank as well see if they will offer a good deal .. our one reduced the interest rate because we have a certain type of account and that worked out to be the best deal in the end.

We dealt with the solicitors and banks ourselves for the mortgage which was a bit of a headache at times when they made mistakes that needed correction but it meant that we learnt more about the process. Using a mortgage broker would make things far easier and most of them claim their fees from the banks directly but you and B2 might like the challenge :)

We wish you the very best of luck in finding the right home and mortgage package.
