ewwo peeplets :)

for diverse and entertaining reasons I'm looking for a flatbed scanner that's visual quality is as high as it can go without becoming too expensive (around 150pound, I'm not made of money).

criteria:
at least 1200x1200dpi (true, not interpolated)
I'd prefer good quality / good drivers over speed, and the interface is allowed to be USB(2). A negative/dia slide thingy is ok but not a must

as I know nothing of these toys I turn to you. please advise :)

I've been looking at this one which comes to ~155 squids, but as I know nothing of these toys I turn to you for advice :)

The only scanners I've ever owned (because they rock so hard) are Agfa, not that that is much help but still.

Hey TdC

As far as I know, HP, Canon and (if Scooba says so) AGFA are around the best scanners you get. My father recently bought a Canon one, nothing fancy, and he has been very impressed with the results thus far.

Like you say, the HP model you picked out looks to be pretty good, as does this Canon D1250U2F which comes in at a similar price.

Kind Regards

thanks peeps :) sooo....it boils down to a difference of 1200 vs 2400 dpi and a built-in dia sled vs an external one.

I like the slim canons more than the slightly clunky seeming HP models, but I don't really have to take the way it looks or the space it takes into consideration, because it will sit on my 'cube under the desk. hmm.

well, I've gone and gotten the HP4570c and up to now it utterly rocks. I've scanned a couple things in different dpi and it's reasonably quick, but more importantly it has a (to me) good picture quality. I've scanned a couple high key pics and the scanner manages to keep a reasonable detail as well as a good colour curve (I guess, as I can can only compare with one other scanner - which sucked hehe).

wow, but I seriously need to get me some more ram heh. at one point I had a >2 gig swapfile with about 9 megs free in main memory (says XP). first time in my life I've found a need for my workstation to go over 512Mb

Welcome to graphics work.

I've had 768 meg for a while now - just cause I could get it when 512 chips were cheap. It helps :D

I'm scanning photos actually :) also, a mate is giving me his neg/dia scanner as he's getting a new one which is nice. the HP I just bought has a negative sled, but I haven't gotten around to testing it yet.
