Dunno, but with adsl, I can host 6 other people for a Ghost Recon game... 7 starts getting ropey... probably helps if they're lpb's too

On your cable connection you'll be able to get about 6 LPBS before it gets jerky, DSL you can get up to about 10 people, as already pointed out, it's VERY server intensive, when you server starts using up all the cpu cycles, the pings go up for everyone.

When u compare cable to adsl do you say adsl is better due to the upload speed?

I got 256 up on my cable you see.

ADSL = 256k Up 512k Down [Around 6 - 7 people at an estimate]
Normal Cable = 128k Up 512k Down [Around 4 - 5 people at an estimate]
Modem = 33k Up 56k Down [Around 0 people at an estimate]

Hope this helps,

Oh and you should never play on the same machine as you host a server, run the dedicated server on a "spare" machine and connect to it thu your lan... If you have the hardware :)

Talking of servers, does the game have bots?? This may sound daft but I finally got the game running this morning and set up a local mp game to have a see and over a period of 10 mins 3 other players joined? I thought local meant just me? Are these bots or have i turned into a gsp?

People are so desperate for servers, that they'll join any servers they see, I put up a local 1.1 server and had 7 people on in a matter of minutes, punks

I just thought a "local" server for "local" people (IE ME!) would have meant no internet access, particularly as there is two options in the control panel - local and internet.

I don't want uninvited Germans on my PC!!!!!

Mmmm. just thought. I should password it eh?

It is all about hardware. On a LAN where bandwidth isnt a problem at all. On a p3 1ghz 10 ppl its But over about 12 and its gone for all fuck.

read the server faq on the official site for guides on bandwidth etc.

some main points from it:

"General rule of thumb:
Cable Modem: 4 - 6 players.
DSL Line: 8 - 10 players
T1+ 16 - X players. (X is dependant on your connection)"

and

"THE SERVER WILL CONSUME 85 TO 100% OF YOUR CPU. This means YOU CANNOT RUN AN INTERNET SERVER ON AND PLAY FROM THE SAME MACHINE. SERVERS MUST BE DEDICATED FOR OPTIMAL AND PROPER PERFORMANCE."

finally

"As a rough rule of thumb, each player requires anywhere from 50 to 80 KBps"

If you want to run a local server then set the game.serverinternet to 0 and it wont show on the masters (inside settings/serversettings.con)
