Best all round Template in use atm is:-

26 Suppresion ( so u get pulsing fend )
47 RuneCarving ( u get the last Ae and bolts)
and the remainder 5 i put on darkness

thats a good template as u get Pulse fend for exp groups which helps @ later lvls and u get good dmg in rvr can ons shot most mages with Sigil of undoing :D . Any questions querys msg me in game.

Best of luck.

Here is the best (and imho accurate) information have found so far in the net.

<cut>

Summary of the 3 Spec Lines and Recommended Templates:
==============================================·

Runecarving:

About 95% of runecasters have chosen to spec runecarving. I think the allure of the highest damage bolt and highest damage area effect spell won many people over. However, bolts are useful only at range. they have the best range of any spell and the most maximum damage but they are hampered by line of sight. You can't cast a bolt into a group. it will be blocked. likewise, shields can partially block bolts and armor also absor bs bolt damage. These spells are treated as "physical" damage, the bolts are also on a 20 second re-use timer.

The other important spell in this line is the AoE. it is the coolest looking spell but has limited functional use (it breaks mez and root). The RC DD is also the weakest DD of the 3 lines

Summary: The primary advantages of RC are the debuffs (which don't debuff their OWN line), and the Bolts. Bolts are long range, on timers, are blocked by shields, armor, can miss, and have a long casting time. They are also incredibly efficient for soloing, and for killing enemy casters because they do massive damage, and give you the ability to 1 shot someone. RC is the best spec if you like to zerg RvR (50 people attacking in mass) and camp portal forts. In these situations battle is chaotic, and there is little strategy. In these situations AoE's work very well against the closely mob'd enemy, and bolts work great for 1 shoting into the crowd during stand-off's.

Recommended RC Template:

- 47 RC with 26 Supp:

Pros: This will give you the last Bolt (Sigil of Undoing) in the RC line and with it comes the insane damage. The 26 Suppression gives you the first pulsing Blade Turn (10 seconds), and since you mentioned it... Obliviate Sight (45% Range debuff)

Cons: Bolts have serious issues, blocked by melee because someone else was in the same zone as you and accident
ally targeted the mob/invader to con it (ok, exaduration, but sometimes feels that way). Bolts can also have their dmg halved by someone wearing a shield, or have high absorb type armor. Only 2 Spec spells in the RC line. Bolt and AoE.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

· Darkness:

This is the Direct Damage spec line. Darkness spells have a lower listed damage than bolts but they can't be blocked and cast much faster and do more damage then the RC DD's. This line also has a DD that damages and debuffs to enhance the primary DD and a rune that can be cast on melee to increase their damage. The range on the DD is much shorter than bolts, the cast time is much faster and the best spells are not on timers.

Summary: Direct Damage spells that do more damage per DD and cast faster then Runcarving. In a 10 second combat window, you will do much more damage with Dark spells. But you do not get the 1 single big hit (no 1-shots).

Recommended Dark Templates:

- 47 Dark with 26 Supp:

This gets you pulsing bladeturn and the best spec DD. This has some drawbacks because you miss out on 3 of the big darkness spells (48 - best ravenbolt [debuffing DD spell], 49 - best damage add tank buff [best in the entire realm and it stacks with the skald song], 50 - best darkness AoE [functions like ravenbolt except area effect]). People love to group with pulsing shield runies!! Every high end group wants one when working PvE. Pulsing shields has a smaller effect in RvR, because of it's fast pace. When you start to have multiple pulsing shield runies in a group, is when this becomes a huge factor in RvR.

- 50 Darkness / 20 Suppression

Pros: The Darkness DD Spell is the hardest hitting in the realm!! Combined with the 2 second cast makes Darkness Runies formidable foes indeed. The dmg add stacked with the Skald's gives a tank awesome melee dmg output (do not cast on Thanes, their self only dmg add is greater than ours). This is the best RvR spec, you will be able to do massive amounts of damage in a very short time span. BUT, without the pulsing shields, you will find it
harder to get groups, and make it to 50 though...

Cons: Only 20 Suppression will only give you the Group Casted BladeTurn (not pulsing), the 35% range debuff and third confusion spell.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Suppression:

This is the "prevent" damage line. Bladeturn allows you to absorb a single melee blow. Pulsing bladeturn automatically recasts on the whole group every 10,8,6 seconds depending on spec level. This line also has a confusion spell, a reduce sight spell (excellent for negating archers and other casters) and a snare DD (and snare AoE). The DD and AoE have the shortest range of all the DD options and does slightly more damage then the RC base line DD, but bladeturn is widely considered to be the best runie spell. The Suppression RM has the best pull line in the game, Nearsight, it has more range then anything else

Summary: Suppression gives you defensive ability, debuffs, and a decent DD. The Runic Shield is the key to a runie!! Every runie SHOULD get Suppression to level 26. No higher, no lower in my opinion, or go all out to 50. Going with any other spec / combo, won't pay off.. The cycling shields are the key to life, and getting groups.

Recommended Supp Templates:
- 50 Suppression / 20 Runecarving

Pros: 6 second pulsing bladeturn. DD/Snare does about as much dmg as the Baseline RC DD, and adds Snare effect as well. Self runic shield. RC may be a good choice with lots of +RC items on. With a base of 20, then +11 in gear, and another couple +1-3 from realm point levels, you can have a relatively high base so that you can do consistently decent damage with the baseline Runebolt.

Cons: High power cost with each pulse of the bladeturn (can be compensated with Healer's Purity of Contemplation or Purity of Meditation spells).

- 50 Suppression / 20 Darkness

Pros: 6 second pulsing bladeturn. DD/Snare does about as much dmg as the Baseline RC DD, and adds Snare effect as well. Gives you the third damage add (only good when there is no Skald around... also cast this on anyone outside the group.. PL'ing).

Cons: High power cost with each pulse of the bladeturn. This tends to be a very passive build, a large amount of your mana is spent on bladeturn, so you are unable to chain nuke like some of the other builds. This has lead to some unhappy runies. Darkness dmg add sacks with Skald's... however, it will halve the Skald's not yours making the over all dmg output less. Of all the templates, this may be the poorest.

What I Would Do:
============================================

If I were to build a new runie today, here's what I would do:
Make a short Kobald, put 10 points into Pie, Dex, and Con.
Put all points into Suppression until you get it to 26. Then I would go Dark with all my remaining points to 47.

Most Runies go Runecarving, and I did.... But I wouldn't if I had to do it again. The reason I went RC'ing, and so did most runies is the AoE, the truth is, you never get to use it! AoE breaks mes's. So you never use in PvE. You hardly ever use it in RvR, because mes is SO powerful. If you AoE, and break all the mes's, and people will be unhappy with you... For the amount that you actually get to AoE, it's not a worthwhile way to go. Because of this you end up using the baseline RC DD as your primary spell, which is the weakest of the 3 lines.

<cut to the end>

- Raja
50 Runie / Palomides

another person then me. I have cut out the parts that don't
deal with specing.

Nice post Irridym....

I played on Middy for ages, and don't think I saw a darkness specced runey ever (I always guessed the obsession with 1 hit kills and flashy spear gfx was the reason).

Oh and runeys get a dmg add buff in their darkness line (adds 7.9dps @ slvl44 btw ), similar to Alb wizards and Hib chanters. If anyone has ever played Alb and Hib with new chars, they might have experienced being buffed by a high lvl wiz/chanter. I got from 1-5 in about 20mins once with a chanter buffing me, I was 2 or 3 hitting oranges lol....

No class is a cookie cutter class (if it is, it is broken). Just a shame that in 46 lvls on Middy, I never saw a darkness specced runey in action... :(

/me goes off to lvl a darkness specced runey..

there's one at lvl 44, grouping with him doubles the exp for the whole group :)
