Rules for our IRC Channels

Whilst Quakenet has rules for users of its service, I thought it worthwhile setting out our own rules for our own channel/s. An onjoin message from the bot would say:
"Welcome to #BarrysWorld, enjoy your stay and please observe our rules we have to protect everyone. They are listed here: url"

Once we have an agreed set of rules in place, we then need someone to implement them.
I'll therefore be recruiting people to act as "admins on demand" in #barrysworld
This recruitment will be by invitation only.

Anyway, proposed rules:

IRC is supposed to be a fun place to be and usually it is. However, a few Do's and Dont's are needed on large channels where a lot of people meet and chat, with wildly varying topics of conversation.
  • Do read and observe Quakenets own Rules (our channel is on their service).They are listed here
  • Do Treat others like you would like to be treated yourself
  • Do feel free to ask questions, but dont EXPECT an answer as we do not provide user support in IRC 24/7
  • Do use our Customer Support service here
  • Do feel free to Chat to anyone with an @ infront of their name (except ^barry^) with questions as they are the channel admins
  • Do be tolerant of newcomers
  • Dont "Shout". ie, dont use Block caps
  • Dont deliberately annoy other people
  • Dont threaten other people
  • Dont advertise other channels, websites or files unless part of a normal conversation

Breaches of some of these rules will result in a Temporary or even Permanent Ban from our channels. Breaches of some of the others will result in a Temporary or Permanent Ban from the whole Quakenet network.

Quakenet has a rule for every occasion, including this :)

Distributing or requesting illegal material in our network is strictly forbidden. This includes, but is not limited to; Illegal copies of software, distribution of MP3 files, movies (VCD/DivX), ie; any copyrighted material where the copyright is not owned by the user.

Hard to make the point well but ppl that join a chan and start going off on one when everyone else is in mid ATI vs Nvidia argument (not that there is an argument there, bad example) are annoying and lame and please don't do it.

Woohoo bout time there was some moderation in the channel. I think choosing non regulars could be a problem, although choosing regulars could be. Good plan though.

Some stats here if you want an idea on who are channel regulars...

Nice idea to have a few more admins, there seems to be a growing trend of muppets appearing in #barrysworld tryin to provoke arguments or just generally annoying people

I hate the away messages that tell people what server they're playing on.

I mean, who cares?

There's magical programs that can do all that for you if you're looking for a mate. Who's gonna go and scroll through pages of an IRC log to see where their mate's playing CS or whatever.

I reckon those should get banned. (The scripts, but yes, the offenders if they persist.)

I would agree if its overly spammed also they should really be limited to clan channels. No one else really cares :)

Agreed. But I assumed that was already a rule, given the "no scripts" message you get when joining.

yeah, that's the trouble, people seem to tolerate these ones for some reason.

It's be nice if ^Barry^ could be programmed to auto kick when it recognised these scripts.

If it's a single line with basic info I don't actually have a problem with it personally. It is a gaming channel.
