Dunno,any ras upper lvl III are really expensive (except determination,you pay lvl IV like lvl III of another RA etc).
and your block % gonna suffer for a lack of WS in front of enemy pure tanks.

I think whit lvl 3 you get the max ammount of benefit/cost for this ra...as pali.

but it's only an opinion.

This is what I would go for - most RA's are geared are performing well in RvR group - works for both offensive and defensive style.

AugCon 1 - for extra hitpoints
AugDex 2 - prereq
Toughness 2 - for extra hitponts (I got about 90 per lvl I think)
Longwind 1 - to regen endurance if you are chasing someone with sprint
The Empty Mind 1 - to use in sticky situtations
Purge - To purge
Avoidance of Magic 3 - Because resists are important
Mastery of Parrying 2 - for better self defense
Mastery of Blocking 3 - to guard self and others better
First Aid 2 - prereq
Ignore Pain - very nice
AugStr 1 - for some extra damage
Mastery of Pain 3 - for nice damage
Faith Healing - cool

I think this will give you the most - it's all about the utility of the RA compared to the increasing cost. And caster's gonna hate you: With constant 35% magic resists, plus racials, plus buffs and plus your soul/elemental ward...And if that doesnt do it, get 10% extra from The Empty Mind. Should make a total of 45%-79%

MoP works on shield attacks too? Crits on slams are quite nice.

And guarding a caster is not the only way to play a defensive Paladin. Ever tried one stuck to and guarding the MA?
