What country do you live in and what is your ISP?

BT used to do this a lot to me when I used the BTOpenworld connection at home, not just for this game but for others too. They just route you somewhere else I guess when they have problem with one of their servers, maybe to fix the ofending one I guess. Also I have heard that its cheaper to route through the US though It may be complete bo**ox :)

well its giving me 50% packet loss :(. i emailed the techys through the adresses VisualRoute gives so i will see what comes from that.

What Biffsmash said sounds quite likely....
And is more or less what I would have guessed at.

oh my, the techy who works for who ever is running the router sent an email back saying "I dont see what the problem is" when in the trace route table it sais "50% packet loss"

All ISP's re-route if there is a problem with the original route. UK has a far better connection to the states than it does to europe, sad but true, so we often get routed through that way.

well now im being routed through cali again

I just looked at the traceroute you pasted into the other thread, http://forums.barrysworld.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36016 you are not being routed through California.

Code:
208.184.231.146 | so-0-0-0.cr2.lhr3.uk.mfnx.net | ?n Fernando, #1010 San Jose CA 95113
is in the UK.

With an overall average of 32ms in that trace, there is no-way that is going through the US. In fact if we were to believe VisualRoute that the location really is in California, that particular hop shows a difference as <1ms which is my maths is of any use would be faster than the speed of light? Pretty good network that :D

Further investigation shows abovenet belongs to MFN.

Code:
| 7 | | 208.184.231.146 | so-0-0-0.cr2.lhr3.uk.mfnx.net | ?n Fernando, #1010 San Jose CA 95113 | | 15 | x | Abovenet Communications, Inc ABOVENET-6 |
| 8 | | 208.185.156.1 | pos3-0.mpr2.lhr1.uk.mfnx.net | ?n Fernando, #1010 San Jose CA 95113 | | 16 | x | Abovenet Communications, Inc ABOVENET-6 |

From their website at http://www.mfn.com/network/ip_networkstatus.shtm

LHR
The London routers are located at the Telehouse and at the AboveNet UK ISX facilities in London, England
The LHR3 routers are located at the AboveNet ISX facility in East India Dock, Docklands, London UK.

Other than lhr being fairly obviously london and the low pings, didn't the fact that it said uk.mfnx.com give you a slight hint as to where that router was? The "location" offered by visualroute is only a guess based on the tld of the router, you shouldn't take it as being correct (just as a guess).

does it really matter? the point is there is packet loss not that someone doesnt know how to read what VisualRoute says correctly.

Well saying "I'm being routed via california, hence my ping is bad" when in fact you're going via london is just the tiniest bit misleading and unhelpful don't you think...

The UK route to mainland europe using software like VisualRoute or Neotrace will usually give you a direct UK > France route. When the normal route is unrouteable, one of the possible routes it switches to a backup route, which uses some routers and gateways managed by, as Tenpit says, MFN. As Danyan says, all their routers have their physical locations set to their site in San Jose, even if they are in Telehouse and Abovenet in London.

In regards to the packet loss, you can usually find that happens when there are network problems, but as long as there is an adequate backup route, there shouldn't be much of an issue, as long as it is set up right. Yes, there will usually be an increase in lag, due to the fact that a packet isn't going via the optimal route.

As for reporting it to RightNow, yes, do that, and include a tracert, but they can only do something about it directly if the problem occurs on their own network. Best they can do otherwise is escalate it to their service provider, who will then take it from there.

On an off-topic note...

Damn I wanna see the inside of Abovenet!
