tbh, knowing how strong the wind was, and the angle he was coming in at anyway im supprised he even attempted it.

Glad you said it first, so i'm not again "just agianst it", but it seems rather "non heroic" and more towards like i said on general about this:

Co: It's too windy to land Captain.
Cap: No it's not.
Co: I'm telling you we won't make it!
Cap: I'm Captain Mehememe! It's not too...e...not too...*NGH!*....mother f*....grah....ok FINE!

Heroics by almost f*cking up.

Not disclaiming the guy can't fly, just that he SEEMS to be a bit of a hothead too.

yea, seems more of a "hell bent" pilot then a heroic one to me.

you can land a plane in most conditions

Japan

It's not as rare as you would think

I think you'll find its a lot more common occurrence than that. Besides where else is he going to land... while its true that the majority of planes carry more fuel than needed its not always enough to go to another airport.

Sure it's common, as shown on the net and above, and yes, you have to sometimes land and yes, a very good pilot.

But calling someone a hero for that is a bit over the top in my book. Seemed there was more fuel as he didn't land, ofcourse, not all facts known and i may be wrong, and if someone does land a plane like that and manages to bring it down safely by force as you may, then, i could put it in the hero category.

Wind is not a constant thing.
The pilot, respectively the ground crew knew exactly how strong the wind was and they gave permission to land. However, during that maneuvre, the plane got hit by a squall (wind shear). That´s what caused the destabilization of the entire plane. Unfortunately, it´s impossible to predict such squalls.

He has people's lives in his hands... that's like saying firefighters aren't heroes because they are simply doing their jobs. The fact that they choose to do these jobs to safely transport people from one destination to another makes them heroes. At the end of the day he's risking his life every time he flies. You use the term hero too exclusively.

People have different perceptions.

Yeah, firefighters ain't heroes for putting out fires. Cops ain't heroes for simply driving around i a squad car and soldiers ain't heroes for sitting around on homesoil and eating canned soup. If they save lives, save those lives with the risk of own life, then they are. That, didn't seem like a "heroic" feet, but as said, this SEEMS like heroism by almost f*cking up. Prove me wrong and i'll say i'm wrong. But until then, my opinion about the pilot being a hothead is as valid as it being a "forced landing attempt".

You use the term hero too loosely, if you want to start that kind of fingerpoint discussion. You don't call a bussdriver a hero for doing his job.

Last year, when I went to Turkey, we had a little bit of crosswind on landing, and everyone was borderline panic... except a 77 year old irishman, a Shaw Gorby, my mother, and me... Who sat and patiently waited for the plane to land. Second we touched down and started to brake, a huge round of applause went up...

I still wonder why.

Course, when we came back, we had some SERIOUS crosswinds at Dublin airport. But we landed safey, and yet again everyone was borderline hysterics, Except my family.

Now were not the great air travelers that some are, but seriously, I was fuckin' ashamed at the conduct of the other passengers.
